Museums Of The Ages

Not visiting would be a tragic crime

Museums Of The Ages
DAILY VACATIONER: January 2015

One thing that will always be true is the beauty and depth, the amazement and the history, the sheer love and passion that is stored in a museum. There is something about seeing old things and new things become something more than what they were.

They become markers of history, plays of love and beauty, tales of a life not known and lives lived and those to come about. These items become a token of a life; they become a story, the story of the person who donated it, who found it and who ever sees it. That's beyond amazing, that a tea cup from the 1500's can bring so many people together and create such a bond through time simply by existing.

Now, not many people would think of it that way- to some it may just be a fragile and useless teacup, but then they look at a painting or a sculpture or a photo, or maybe just the people who are encompassed by these items and a sense runs through them that they might not be able to find anywhere else. That's inspiring and the power of a museum.

However, not everyone is cut out for a museum of the traditional kind, and not all museums are children friendly. So here is a list of museums to visit this summer- some of them for free:

1. Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

Address: 990 Washington Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11225

2. Children's Museum of East End

6. Old Bethpage Village Restoration

7. Vanderbilt Mansion and Planetarium

8. Long Island Children's Museum

11. Dimenna Children's History Museum

170 Central Park West New York, NY 10024

12. American Museum of Natural History

Central Park West & 79th St. New York, NY 10024

A lot of these museums listed do seem to be only for children, however, that is not entirely true. While each museum is child friendly, they're actually more of an "all ages" type of museum. They cater to all who wish to come and visit. No matter how old you are, or what your taste may be, these museum are sure to inspire the love, history, passion and lives for generations to come and an interest in anyone.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
