This week’s MSU crib is the Mississippi Gamma chapter of Pi Beta Phi! Established in 1867, Pi Beta Phi is a fraternity for women dedicated to promoting friendship, developing women of intellect and integrity, cultivating leadership potential, and enriching lives through community service. Pi Beta Phi came to Mississippi State University in the 2008-2009 school year and started out with only about 60 members. As of January 2015, that number has increased to over 200 women, and the pledge classes continue to grow each year!
The Pi Beta Phi house is known across campus as “the mansion” full of old southern style. From the dormer and shutter windows with natural wood finish, to the two story front porch, complete with rocking chairs, the Pi Beta Phi house has a southern charm that stands out on the row. The Pi Beta Phi house also has an informal living room downstairs where girls can kick their feet up on the comfy couches and watch TV between classes.
Another unique feature about the Pi Beta Phi house is the energy efficient and environmentally friendly design, which includes energy efficient lighting and plumbing, renewable and sustainable finishes, such as bamboo flooring and separate thermostats throughout the house for better control over the inside temperature. This is why the Mississippi Gamma Chapter house was the first sorority house in the nation to receive the distinction from the United States Green Building Council!
Pi Beta Phi also has extra parking along the far side of the house, which is a luxury on chapter nights when the majority of the parking on the row is full, especially with the increasing number of girls joining each year. This is one of the many advantages to being located at the end the row, along with less traffic and more space for philanthropy events, such as Pie Night and Pi Phi Parlor.
The Pi Beta Phi house of Mississippi State, with its southern charm and homey feel, is this week’s Crib of the Week! And to the members of the Mississippi Gamma chapter of Pi Beta Phi, thank you for all the work you do to make the campus and the community a better place!
