One of the most emotionally traumatizing things in life is when the credits begin to roll as your most favorite show comes to a final end. You've got a lot invested in this show, and you've been binge-watching it for months, making your way through season after season and following the journeys of the characters that have become more than fictional figures for you. So what do you do when you've watched every episode of "One Tree Hill," or "Gossip Girl" or "How I Met Your Mother," and life as you know it has effectively ended? During that melancholic period in the immediate aftermath of your most loved show's end, watching movies will allow you to come to peace with the separation anxiety you are undoubtedly feeling. Check out some of my favorite movies on Netflix, which appear under the "Independent" tab, and you'll be feeling better in no time!
1. "Remembrance"
This movie, featuring German and Polish with English subtitles, focuses upon the love affair between two prisoners in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. The characters in this film will captivate you, and you'll be horrified, depressed, and marveling at the amazing, terrifying and awesome creation that is "Remembrance."
2. "How I Live Now"
This apocalyptic film features the journeys of several characters who attempt to find refuge during and in the aftermath of what appears to be a nuclear holocaust. You'll become attached to the adolescent characters, and you'll take part in their struggles while rooting for the love between the protagonist and a very handsome boy.
3. "6 Years"
This movie encapsulates the tribulations that a long-term relationship poses for two young adults who seem to be growing apart, after 6 years of togetherness. There is a very realistic quality to the way this movie is filmed, and the situations of these two lovers are highly relatable for anyone trying to make a relationship work.
4. "White Bird In A Blizzard"
This disturbing film features the quest of a teenage girl (played by our very own Shailene Woodley, aka Amy from "The Secret Life of the American Teenager") to find out what happened to her mother, who mysteriously disappeared years ago. The final scenes of this movie will captivate you and disgust you, though you may never have expected it...
5. "The Road Within"
This film follows the journeys of three teenagers who are each dealing with various mental or emotional disorders, who escape from their treatment facility and embark on a chaotic, hilarious, and occasionally heart-wrenching road trip. You'll be impressed by the quality of the acting, and you'll come away with a different view about three mental disorders that are sometimes overlooked.
6. "Heathers"
This movie features a girls' high school clique gone wrong, and becomes one of the most bizarre horror movies I have ever seen. Needless to say, you'll think twice about making your friends mad after you watch this film...
7. "Goodbye World"
Another apocalyptic film, "Goodbye World" illustrates the efforts of one group of friends to "ride out" the apocalypse in a remote cabin in the woods. Human nature in all its forms comes to light, and you won't be able to stop watching this engaging movie once you've started it.
8. "Ain't Them Bodies Saints"
This sad love story of two incredibly endearing criminals will bring you to tears. It is about the struggle of a single mother, the difficulties faced by residents in a small, southern town, and the unending love of a father for his girlfriend and daughter.
9. "The Long Walk Home"
This historical movie about the Civil Rights Movement and bus boycott of the 1950s will bring you to tears, fill you with a deep, unshakable regret, and lead you to question what you know about your history (especially if you, like me, are from the South). This film is a PG version of a revolutionary period in history that still remains one of my favorites, even after several years of having watched it for the first time.
10. "Perfect Sisters"
If you have a sister, I sincerely hope that y'all are not as crazy as these two girls are... This film is disturbing, and you'll never be able to un-see Georgie Henley (Lucy from "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe") as a twisted young woman, nor will Abigail Breslin remain the sweet little Olive from "Little Miss Sunshine." Give this film a watch though, if you have a couple of hours!
