Hidden Figures released on Friday, January 6th and it exceeded all of my expectation.
The movie, based on a true story was beautifully executed. Hidden Figures was humorous, heartwarming, and empowering, and is such an important movie.
Not only does it give credit to the hard working individuals that made the fist space mission possible, it represents a black woman in a manner that is not often seen in the media. Black women are often hyper-sexualized in music videos, and are portrayed as that stereotypical "angry black woman". There was none of that In this movie.
The woman in this story broke barriers. In a time of segregation, they were the pioneer for the integration of NASA. They knew their worth, and with witty comebacks, challenging "the man", and their determination; everyone knew that as well.
Also, crowd participation also made this movie one for the books. From the, "Yes you tell em' girl" to the rounds of applause many times during and at the end, it was apparent that everyone in the audience was invested in these characters.
I urge everyone to go see Hidden Figures. Children and adults no matter what race or ethnicity. You will feel empowered in a way like never before. In a world where I as a black women, feel less than because of the pigmentation in my skin, it gave me that push that made me say to myself, "Hey, I can do anything I put my mind to."
