I stumbled upon this film during a late-night-Netflix marathon (yes it is still on Netflix). Starring Lexi Ainsworth, Jimmy Bennet, and Hunter King, "A Girl Like Her" is a must watch that shows how powerfully bullying (both cyber and in-person) can truly affect a person. The film is kind of like a documentary, only the events, and people are fictional.
The film opens with characters Jessica (Lexi Ainsworth) and trusty best friend Brian (Jimmy Bennet), as Brian shows her and encourages her to wear a small hidden camera. The moment the film really gets going though is when we watch Jessica overdose on pills found in her home's bathroom cabinet.
The majority of the film is following a woman as she creates a documentary on Jessica and her school. During this time, the woman also talks to Avery (Hunter King), who is rumored to have bullied Jessica.
This is a very powerful film regarding bullying and its effects on the victims as it shows both the bully's perspective and the person who is being bullied. At one point in the movie, Avery is shown footage of her bullying Jessica, and how she reacts brought me to tears.
Hunter King does an impeccable job with Avery's character. While watching the film I hated her, but as the movie continued on and showed Avery's home life and her perspective on things going on I began to really empathize with the number one it girl at their high school.
I believe that "A Girl Like Her" is a film that can change the way people see bullying, and will actually help to end it. The raw emotion shown by Ainsworth, Bennet, and King is so realistic it's hard to believe that the movie is not a real documentary.
With a 92 minute run time, invest some time into watching this film that brings to light and talks about a very sensitive subject.
