Adam Garone, CEO and co-founder of the Movember Foundation, told students at a campus IFC-sponsored event Nov. 17 about the importance of the cause, reminding them never to underestimate themselves through the story of the effort to fight against men's health issues, which started with just four determined men and turned into 5 million people internationally.
Movember is an annual effort held throughout the month of November in which men collect pledges to grow mustaches, and both genders participate in fundraisers and make other attempts to help spread awareness about and combat men's health issues. Garone said in his speech that the effort started out at a bar in Melbourne, Australia. He said four men were able to inspire 30 in Melbourne to grow out mustaches in 2003, and from there an outpouring of curiosity from friends and strangers followed. He said to date the foundation has raised approximately $700 million. ”You can’t truly think outside the box unless you live outside the box," Garone told the audience, reminding them that naivety is a good thing.
Movember is annually one of the Texas IFC's biggest charitable efforts. Last year the Texas IFC claimed the top spot out of all interfraternity councils nationwide in Movember fundraising, taking in more than $30,000. The University of Southern California IFC came in second last year with roughly $17,000. The Texas IFC has set this year's goal at $30,000, attempting to continue on last year's success. It kicked off the effort this and last year with a shave truck on campus and is carrying over from last year its Movember photo contest, giving participants a chance to show off their staches and see who's got the best one.
