When I was a lowly senior in high school, my only wish was to move away from home. Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but moving away was something I needed to do. I get the question, "Why didn't you stay at home for college?" every time I meet someone new. My hometown has a university, but that university comes with things that I have grown to love about my college away from home.
1. The football games. Sure home has football games too, but they're certainly not the vols.
2. You hardly see anyone from your high school. High school graduation was a blessing.
3. THE FREEDOM. Mom isn't around or even in the same city so you're free to do as you please. Just remember, not everything that happens at college stays at college.
4. New friends. These people don't know you, nor have they heard of you. You can completely reinvent yourself, but you really only get the chance once.
5. Along with your new found freedom comes new found responsibility. No one is there to do your laundry or buy you groceries. You're an adult now pal, and it's time to learn how to take care of yourself.
Moving away to college forced me to grow up in ways I simply would not have if I had stayed at home. Whether you decide to move away or not, college will come with experiences you'll learn to appreciate. Good or bad, lessons are learned and memories are made, and one day you'll look back and smile.
