When life gets you down, it’s time to call your mother.
Throughout my past year and a half of college, my mother has helped me through all of the ups and downs, even though we are over two hundred miles apart. Also, sometimes there are just days when all you need to hear is your mother’s voice saying, “It’s okay,” or “It will all work out.” No matter how much you argue and yell at each other, she will always be there for you, and that is exactly what most college aged women need. Here are some things my mother has told me to get me through some tough times in college:
“Take a break, who says you have to go out every night, or go to the gym every day?”
A lot of the time I end up complaining to my mother about things I do not want to do, and she basically always says that I do not have to do anything I don’t want to. Sometimes, it is better for you to just take a break, watch some Netflix and just relax all night with your friends or by yourself.
“There will be other boys, you do not need the ones that do not treat you right.”
Now, boys will forever be an issue in the lives of women, and that is unavoidable. Most of the time in college, relationships with boys don’t end up working out. We are young and just starting our somewhat adult lives, but as a college aged girl, it is very easy to forget that having one bad guy experience is not the end of the world, and it is not even a big deal at all. Mothers know that more than anyone else, because chances are that they have been there, too. Whenever I tell my mom that some guy ended up being a total asshole (sorry for my language), she basically tells me that he is so not worth my time and definitely not worth worrying about if he is not going to treat me right, which is exactly what I need to hear.
“Remember why you are at school.”
This is not exactly what you always want to hear when all you want to do is go out and have fun with your friends, or drink wine and cry about some guy, or just drink wine because "wine not?" but it is exactly what you should be thinking about. You are at school to study, get good grades, receive your degree, and start to live your own life. Your parents both did it, and now it is your turn. College is preparing you for the beginning of the rest of your life, remember that.
“Everything happens for a reason.”
This is my all time favorite advice my mom gives me, because you can literally apply it to every aspect of your life. Whenever something bad happens to me, like I didn’t get the promotion I applied for, or lost an election, my mom always says, “Everything happens for a reason,” and I truly believe it to be true. You may not like what happens, and there may not be a clear reason why, but in the long run, it is for the best. If your mother says so, it must be true.
