It’s that time of year again: the time of sweater weather, LL Bean Boots, infinity scarves and leggings is upon us. When you are shifting your closet from summer dresses and cool fall blazers to blistering winter wear, do you ever get tired of repeating the same outfits? Are you done with blending in with the sea of leggings and oversized sweater wearers? Here is a list of 10 winter closet must-haves that will update your closet, and take you from drab to winter fab.
- Fur. Fur vests, fur coats, go fur crazy. Many of the items on this list can be dressed up with an element of fur, just putting that fluffy finishing touch on an outfit. For example, a plain white blouse, a pair of faux leather leggings, and black booties make a great outfit on their own, but adding a fur vest gives the whole ensemble a cozy, and chic touch. Look to celebrities such as Olivia Palermo for inspiration for, well, everything, but especially for incorporating fur and leather into her impeccable style. Ellie Goulding’s cover for her CD, "Delirium," also offers a beautiful pink fur coat for those of us whom are confident enough to rock a fur coat.
- Leather. Accents of leather in an outfit give it an edge of rocker chic meets high fashion model. A pair of leather leggings would be an easy way to incorporate this trend beloved by all It-girls, from Cara Delevingne to Kendall Jenner. You can easily style leggings, since that’s all they are — leggings! Just swap out your plain ones for these edgier ones, and take your lazy days up a notch. Plenty of stores offer a variety of these pants, either in plain legging form, or in a more structured jeans sort of way. Both styles are available at Nordstrom, Lord and Taylor and plenty of other places online. Wear them with your sweaters and blouses and you will immediately look more put together. Leather skirts and asymmetrical skorts are also perfect ways to integrate the leather trend into your closet, and can be paired with cropped sweaters, mock turtleneck shirts, and crop tops for a bold nighttime look. For these, look to stores such as Topshop, ASOS and Zara.
- Sweater dresses. Wearing one of these is probably the easiest way to look your best, with the smallest amount of effort. A sweater dress is literally wearing a giant sweater, but cuter. Look to Topshop’s Kendall and Kylie collection for a few variations on the basic sweater dress. Wear yours with tights and over-the-knee boots to channel your inner Jenner, and nail this trend.
- Lace-up. The trend of lace-up blouses, dresses, and shirts is so cool. It is almost like 1970s pirate chic, but looks great on just about anyone. Opt for a white and black option, just to have more outfit combinations. I would recommend wearing a black lace up blouse with a tan A-line skirt, and a white shirt with leather leggings, skirt, or a pair of high waisted jeans and booties. A shift dress with a lace-up front is super cute, and a little bit sexy, so it can easily go from a day to night look with a change in makeup and shoes. It would be a perfect outfit if your dress were paired with over-the-knee boots, a la Ellie Goulding or Gigi Hadid, two celebrities with amazing style.
- Button-down skirts. Keeping with the trend of revisiting the fashion of the 1970s, a button-down skirt is certainly a necessity. Easily paired with a variety of sweaters, shirts and blouses, this kind of skirt is so cute and very stylish. A-line skirts are universally flattering, as they accentuate the waist and skim over the hips and upper thighs. Look to stores such as Urban Outfitters, ASOS and the much cheaper Forever 21 for this skirt in a variety of materials. I would opt for a tan suede, light chambray denim, or olive green or burgundy corduroy. Those are perfect fall and winter shades, and will give you more options to match with.
- High neck tops. Never mind the 1970s, let’s go back to Renaissance fashion and cover up our necks! This trend has been displayed on plenty of celebrities, from Jennifer Lawrence, to Blake Lively, and my favorite, Olivia Palermo. Blouses and dresses with lacy high necks look trendy and sophisticated, and the tops can easily be paired with a skirt or pair of leggings and a fur vest for a stylish and standout outfit. Mock turtleneck, actual turtleneck, and cowl neck sweaters are another way to incorporate this trend into your own style, as they are easily paired with leather leggings and jeans for a cool It-girl look, such as Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Selena Gomez often do.
Well. I don’t know about you, but I’m desperately in need of a shopping trip after writing and reading this. Good luck! Hopefully you can see yourself branching out and experimenting with one, two, or all of these trends! (And hopefully you don’t break the bank trying…)
