More Than Locker Room Banter

This is bigger than politics; this is about ethics

I am a woman. I have breasts, I have curves, so, according to Donald Trump, that means it's okay to grope me without consent. Because apparently now we don't condemn sexual assault if it happens to someone who has money and is running for President. Supporters claim his statements are "unrelated to his candidacy for President," "happened a long time ago," and " are just locker room talk; not actions." All of these statements are flat out wrong, insulting on multiple levels and most of all disturbing.

In case you're unfamiliar with the situation, last Friday, audio from a taping of "Access Hollywood" in 2005 was discovered by the Washington Post in which Donald Trump was apparently unaware his mic was on while talking on his bus with former host, Billy Bush. He bragged about moving on a married woman "like a bitch" but wasn't able to succeed. He then freely said the following, "You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. " As if that wasn't bad enough, he then tops it all off by concluding: "Grab them by the p---y. You can do anything."

Okay. Wait. Those statements are horrifying in-and-of themselves. But maybe, maybe if Trump came out and apologized for those statements, showed some true remorse, it wouldn't be as bad. However, this is Donald Trump we're talking about. In a response statement, he said, "This was locker-room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago. Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course — not even close. I apologize if anyone was offended.”

Here's the problem with that statement. Not only does it try to make those vulgar and disgusting comments seem mundane, it also tries to excuse them. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's break down his supporters' defense, shall we?

First, "It happened a long time ago." Alright, I could see how this might be a somewhat valid argument if Donald Trump was, say, 16 at the time. People can change a lot from 16 to 26. But The Donald was not 16. He was 59 years old. He was a grown man, a father, over half a century old and he was talking about women like the only thing they were good for was pleasing his "uncontrollable" sexual urges. I'm sorry, but if you haven't learned how to control yourself and show some common decency to a woman in 59 years, your opinion is invalid. And you have a serious problem. A man who has a daughter who he claims to care about should not even be thinking the things he was talking about doing. A father does not talk about women like they are objects. A father does not treat women like sex dolls. A father respects women the same way he would want some other man to respect his own daughter. And at 59 years old, you should most definitely know all of this.

Second, his statements are "unrelated to his candidacy for President." There is more to a President than just policy. A president is the face of your country to the rest of the world. A president is someone who works for the betterment of all the people in his country. A president is who your kids look up to. Character, integrity, beliefs are what define your president. And they are also what shapes his policy. Those statements reveal a lot about Donald Trump's character (what little character he seems to possess). They show a man who has never been taught empathy, who has no regard for the feelings of those around him, who sees himself as above others, who sees women as below men, who has no concept of what it means to be seen as less than whole, who refuses to accept responsibility for his actions, and who will do anything to get more power and fame. Picture a random man saying these things about women, bragging that he has groped them without consent and thinking he was justified in doing it. You would probably say this man is disgusting and should be in prison. You would not say this man would make a great president. You would not say a man who refuses to admit his wrongdoing in sexually assaulting more than one woman should be in control of your future or your children's futures. Donald Trump is not a man. He is a spoiled child, drunk on power, believing he is above the morals of our society, in desperate need of a time-out.

Finally, we come to the infamous "locker room banter" defense. This statement is probably the most infuriating to me, personally. On one hand, it trivializes his comments, making it seem like this was just a "boys being boys" incident when it was completely the opposite. These are not normal nor acceptable comments under any circumstances. I've never heard "locker room banter" before, but I can say for a fact that what he said was not it. What Donald Trump said was vulgar, demeaning and disturbing. And I'm not speaking from a political standpoint, I'm speaking from a "this is a man who has gotten away with this for his entire adult life" standpoint. With that one statement, he validated every crude joke, every straying hand, every young boy's fantasy about women and how it is acceptable to treat them. It is chilling to me that this less-than-a-man has abused women and has more than likely instilled those beliefs in his own sons as well. On the other hand, his locker room defense just waves a hand away at his statements. As flippant as he can be, he excuses sexually aggressive behavior as no big deal. He refuses to accept responsibility for his appalling misbehavior and instead deflects any wrong-doing away from himself and onto Bill Clinton. He says they were just words. But we all know words are rarely just that. They were actions; you can bet on that.

I have sat here and I have thought and thought about what words to use to describe this burning in my chest. This rage at the audacity of one man who thinks he has a right to it all both profoundly drives me and sickens me. Because I know this is not just one man. I know there are men out there who believe the same thing. I know I will probably meet one of those men. This is bigger than politics. This is about precedent. This is about the message we send to every man and boy in this country that sexual assault is okay. This is about the message we send to every woman and girl in this country that you are powerless in the face of powerful men. If you try to defend his actions, then you are condoning sexual assault. You are saying that one man, who claims he will bring back "law and order" to this country, is above the law in this country. You are saying power betters ethics. I, for one, refuse to compromise my beliefs to support a man who has unsettled me and infuriated me to my core. I refuse to further injustice. I refuse to be silent. And if I ever do come face to face with Donald Trump or any man like him who thinks he can treat me like a worthless piece of trash, you'd better believe that's the last time he says "locker room banter" with a full set of teeth and testicles intact.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
