As your social media feeds blew up with photos filled with Kappas and Pi Phis painted and sporting jerseys, it seemed as though these sororities mixed up the dates of Bid Day. However, what they came together for was a truly important tradition.
Ever wonder why Pi Phi and Kappa are so similar? Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma were both founded at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. Pi Beta Phi, founded on April 28, 1867, was the first national secret college society of women to be modeled after the men's Greek-letter fraternity. Three short years later, Kappa Kappa Gamma was founded on October 13, 1870, on the same campus. Both of these organizations have such rich history that is intertwined. To celebrate being "sister sororities" Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma come together on campuses all throughout the country and host an event called Monmouth. There's no set plan for how you celebrate this tradition. It's just a day when we can get together and have fun.
On Sunday, February 21, the LSU chapters of Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma came together to celebrate a unique and wonderful tradition and called it Monmouth Games. Everyone decked themselves out in paint, glitter and fanny packs to rep their house. The first part of the day started at Highland Park where the two sororities faced off in competitive games. Kappa won the first two rounds of games, an egg toss and a hula hoop challenge. The final showdown was a dodgeball tournament. Pi Phi won the final showdown, but it was Kappa that took home the trophy this year.
After the day of field games, everyone was bussed to Bogie's for a crawfish boil. This was a great opportunity for everyone to let loose and have fun together. The whole day was filled with sisterhood, laughter and friendly competition. Traditions like this allow for the Panhellenic community as a whole to bond and share memories outside of each individual sorority.
A member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Haley Miller, put together an awesome video to give people a glimpse of how the day went down. Enjoy!
