Money!

Money!
The Odyssey

In my eighty-four years, I have never seen anything like it.

People are pitifully wasting their money!

I don’t know who’s worst: The young or the rich!

I’m not laughing. This is not funny.

I’ve seen people old and young, wasting it,

Especially celebrities with their possessions galore.

Plastic surgery, fancy gadgets, mansions, and Mercedes?

These things look like total bores!

Back in my day, money was actually treasured.

We would put it in our banks.

We barely used money for trivial pleasures,

Because we know we were so lucky that we had to give thanks!

Some of you young people may do the same,

But, look at the majority of you now.

You begging and yelling Mommy and Daddy for money?

No matter we act holier-than-thou!

Money? Money? Ha!

It’s something that I don’t own.

I have no job, no food, and no shelter.

All what I do is roam.

I am lucky if I get a room in a shelter,

but I usually sleep in a box.

My clothes are old and dirty because of the ground,

and they make me smell like a fox.

Because I have no money,

I have no breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

I am dehydrated and I have an everlasting hunger.

I can feel my ribs and I swear I’m getting thinner.

I am always sitting here on the streets,

Watching people, feeling envious.

They walk with their designer’s clothing and bags,

While I am here, sad and penniless.

Look at my fancy mansion,

With movie theaters, bowling alley, and an indoor pool.

We even have a basketball court in the backyard!

Isn’t that so cool?

And this bag is made of fox fur.

These darlings are really divine.

I may have spent a lot of money on the bag,

But, I’m glad that this is mine!

And what do you do think of my tan and hair?

I’ve just got them done!

The tan on my skin makes me shine,

And these long hair extensions are second to none!

Now if you excuse me, I need to go to my limo.

I’m going to Las Vegas by my private plane.

Being rich is the best part of my life!

With my richness, life is just a big game.

Yes, I have two parents, a car, and home.

But, not everything is easy to afford.

I am a college student, paying off student loans.

So, I need to have money to hoard.

I have five part-time jobs,

To make some decent cash.

But, juggling jobs and my 12-credit work load

Makes me break down and crash.

Elders today think we are slackers,

Taking the easy path and slacking off.

But, life essentials are much more expensive for us.

So, they can’t come over to us and scoff!

With our money, we have to be careful,

To save money for things like housing and a car.

Because without money,

we will not go very far.

___________________________________________________________________

I don’t care much about money,

But Mommy and Daddy always fret.

They care about saving and spending, and accounting,

And other stuff that I don’t get.

When I do think of money,

I always think of buying candy and toys,

Music, video games, and stuffed animals.

They give me so much joy!

But, Mommy and Daddy warned me that,

When I get money, I shouldn’t spend.

They said if I become greedy and get stupid things,

Then I won’t have any friends!

So, when I’m grown up,

I’ll be smart!

I will save money, and even donate to the poor.

And I will have a good heart!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
