OK, stop. I can already see you rolling your eyes and getting upset and hurt. Before you go and do all of that, hear me out.
Being a young adult, it seems like the phrase "My Mom is My Best Friend" gets thrown around a lot. At my age, people are maturing and are realizing that maybe their mom isn't their worst enemy and that she's actually their best friend. Well....I, we, are not like them.
You are not my best friend. AND THAT'S OK.
You are still my Mom, and you definitely always will be. You have four children, and we can't all be your best friend, otherwise that would be overwhelming for you, and I'm simply just looking out for your stress levels. You and my sister, you guys click. She calls you when she's upset, she calls you when she's happy. Honestly, she will call you just to sit on the phone. You don't even have to exchange any words.
She needs you 24/7, and I do not.
That's not a bad thing.
It's not you, it's me. It really is. I am a low maintenance child and can pretty much do most of this life thing by myself. I don't need you to comfort me every time I'm upset, I can do that myself. I don't feel the need to talk to you (or anyone) constantly. That doesn't mean I love you any less than I do anyone else in this world. Just because I'm not attached to you at the hip, like my sister is to you, and like you are to your own mother, doesn't mean I don't value you in my life.
This mindset you hold has GOT TO GO. It's stressful on the both of us. You think too much, and me, well maybe I don't think enough. You can't take it to heart because it's not that big of a deal. If you want to spend time with me, or if you want to talk to me ASK. I am a very busy young adult, and all of my extra time goes to getting as much sleep as I can, but I'll cut out some of that sleep if you feel the need to tell ME about YOUR day. I will listen, of course. I would never turn you down. I still come to you for the really huge and important things in my life, just not the little things.
You're not my best friend. We don't go together hand in hand, because you and I, we just don't fit that way. We go together arms in arms with every hug.
There's no need to worry about why we aren't best friends. There's no need to worry about why I don't talk to you every day. There's no need to be upset when you feel as though I talk to others more than you.
You're my mom, and you always will be. The day you should start to worry is the day I choose someone else over you as my emergency contact.
