The morning preceding the GOP debate, Mitt Romney delivered a scorching indictment of Donald Trump, calling him a phony, fraud, misogynist, and a detriment to America’s future. Yikes! The basis of Romney’s tirade can be summarized when Romney bluntly said:
“If we Republicans choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished.”
Romney then unloaded even more insults upon Trump. Romney used the same type aggressive and blunt name calling rhetoric that made has made Trump very “popular” in the 2016 presidential race. He bolstered Trump from every angle imaginable, hitting topics such as Trump's prejudice rhetoric, his robust personality, his policy, business record, and even his tax returns.
At the conclusion of Romney's speech, Paul Warband of the Washington Post said;
“speech is a microcosm of the entire effort now underway by party insiders to find some way to get rid of Trump. Too little, too late, and offered by precisely the wrong people, it will probably produce the exact opposite of its intended effect.”
A few hours later, Warband was proven to be right. Romney's speech rubbed not only Trump supporters, but everyone in the GOP, the wrong way.
There was good intentions rooted in the presentation, but the outcome of it illustrated the disfunction of the GOP. Through this, Romney further split the Republican party. The Donald Trump movement is gradually becoming bigger, and Romney's speech added fuel to the fire. The speech ironically gave Trump an edge in the debate later that afternoon.
You can watch the whole Romney speech by clicking on this link here:
The GOP was hoping that Romney’s speech would expose Trump for the tragic fire that he has been portrayed to be, but instead they it showcased the corrupted culture of American politics and GOP. In his 20 minute speech, Romney attempted to undermine Trump’s support, but instead Romney speech bolstered Trump’s numbers both in Florida and Kentucky. In addition, there was outlining of backlash against Romney, and Trump supporters came out to support the Republican front runner. It turns out Romney was the worst spokesperson the GOP could have chosen to make a last stand against Trump. The GOP wanted to unite the party against Trump. Now, the GOP fear that Trump becoming bigger than the Republican party is coming into fruition. Since the tirade, Trump has continued to gain thousands followers per day. His supporters are not the only ones giving him support, many political twitter personalities backlashed Romney speech. Here are some tweets from political analysts following Romney's tirade of Trump:

Unless Romney is planning on entering the race, all he is doing is putting Trump’s face in the media spotlight once again. By making this speech hours before the GOP debate, it gave Trump time to prepare content while making him the highlighted feature in the debate. Romney’s speech did not help the GOP in any way. Rather than endorsing a single candidate, Romney advised Republican voters to vote for whatever candidate as the best chance to beat Trump in particular state. Is Romney trying to be the sensei of the GOP? Trump has already survived being attacked by the Pope, the current President, countless comedians, everyone at Fox News, and has gotten away with it. Did people think this would sway Trump supporters; a simple tirade from the ex GOP nominee who ran one of the worst campaigns in history, and whom reached out to receive support from him? It just resembles the downfall of Romney’s political career. This is just another revelation that the Trump movement is remarkably significant and real. Trump has a large loyal base that is not going to shrink anytime soon. Whether you like him or not, he is someone everyone needs to be attention.
A lot of the things Romney said against Trump held truth. A majority of people would agree with Romney statements. However, the irony and hypocrisy of Romney’s speech made a very distasteful and embarrassing impression on the American people. Through this, Romney's credibility is thrown out the door. Romney conducted his tirade of Trump four years after he desperately sought and publicized Trump’s endorsement of him during the 2012 campaign.
Yet here, Romney questioned Trump’s business success;
"But you say, 'Wait wait wait,' isn't he a huge business success? Doesn't he know what he's talking about? No he isn't. And know he doesn't. His bankruptcies have crushed small businesses and the men and women who worked for them. He inherited his business, he didn't create it. And what ever happened to Trump Airlines? How about Trump University? And then there's Trump Magazine and Trump Vodka and Trump Steaks and Trump Mortgage. A business genius he is not.”
Four years ago, Romney praised Trump after accepting his endorsement:
Romney showed America that the GOP picked the worst person to take a stand to stop the Trump movement. Romney is an anthem of the basis that Trump is fighting against. Trump is selling the people that he is “Going to Make America Great Again” and that he is going to make America “winners” in all phases of the international market. Romney represents losing; need we mention his failure to unseat Obama in 2012. Upon hearing Romney's speech, Trump had a “Trumpish” response on Twitter, calling out the former GOP nominee in his typical fashion:

Trump continued to belittle Romney during his speech in Maine;
"He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, 'Mitt, drop to your knees' -- he would have dropped to his knees," Then when asked about Romney in the 2012 race "That was a race, I have to say, folks, that should have been won ... I don't know what happened to him. He disappeared. He disappeared. And I wasn't happy about it, I'll be honest, because I am not a fan of Barack Obama, because I backed Mitt Romney -- I backed Mitt Romney. You can see how loyal he is."
Romney is a symbol of the white-shoe conservative politicians that the Trump movement is rebelling against. Trump highlights the fact that he is an outsider of the political spectrum. He professes that he holds the interests of the people, rather than the party establishment. Romney stressed that Trump being nominated as the GOP nominee with would be detrimental to the establishment, rather than being dangerous for the people. Romney failed to realize that Republicans do not care about the status of the establishment. In fact, most middle class workers are angry at the Washington political machine. Romney's pursuit to the grow the establishment is the reason why he fails to connect with the American people, and is the main reason why he lost the 2012 Presidential election. In comparison, Trump has been relatable to American citizens which is evident to his consumption of the working class and Evangelical vote. Trump has used his reality T.V. showmanship to capture the spotlight on himself.
The 2016 election will be the first election I will have the opportunity to express my right to vote for the President of the United States. Currently, the Democratic frontrunner is being investigated by the FBI for a federal crime, while the other front runner is a reality T.V. star who has publicly offended countless groups of people. There is a very possible chance that the American people will have to choose between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to be our next Commander in Chief. This election is going to have a huge impact on our generation. As of now, it looks like Donald Trump is going to be the face of the GOP whether they like it or not. The Trump movement will soon have a bigger face than the actual GOP. I personally have very mixed feelings about Donald Trump. Whether I like him or not, I have to acknowledge the Donald Trump machine as something that has not been seen before. Despite being criticized by world leaders, every single media outlet, countless celebrities, and using offensive rhetoric in our racially sensitive society, Trump has somehow dominated the GOP primary election. Trump has created an emblazing inferno in the political world. Romney’s speech essentially added alcohol and brush to Trump’s powerful and unpredictable wildfire. Some people think Donald Trump contains remnant qualities great American leaders like Ronald Reagan, and people believe Trump has the potential to turn America around. However, some fear that Donald Trump will be exactly what Mitt Romney says he will be - a detriment to America. It's a possibility that we may have to see what Trump can do, because Trump's marching at a pace that can’t be stopped.
