Minority Brothers Crew

A bond that will last a lifetime.

Minority Brothers Crew

I never thought I would ever compete with a dance team. I always hoped that one day I would, but nothing ever showed me that I would compete with a team, except while looking at America's Best Dance Crew. It's funny how life works because not too long after I began dancing with a team, I began to compete with them, as well. My thirst for competition with dance teams were met and I thank them for everything. The reason I'm here in my dance crew is because of this team, known as Minority Brothers Crew.

It all started in 2012 when my captain, Charlie "Blackstar" Contreras, offered me an opportunity to audition for their team after the very first workshop that I taught in. I was very excited to be asked this because it made me feel that I was worthy enough to actually be in a competitive dance team. I've never auditioned for anything in my life before, so it was very nerve wracking when I was told about this. I practiced day and night, inside and outside of school to make sure I secured a spot for myself. It is moments like these that taught me the meaning of going for what you want. No matter how scared I was, something told me that it was going to be okay.

Side note: on the day of the auditions, I met two very influential people in my life. Jon Jimenez, also known as my mentor, and Ramon Grande. These two people have pushed me to become even better. Not only were they judges at the auditions, but they were my teachers as well and I thank them for all of their knowledge and teachings. Also - they're a part of The Renegades Elite Company, which you all know I love.

Because of Minority Brothers, I had the opportunity to compete with them at, World of Dance Dallas 2013, Dallas Hip Hop Dance Fest, Dallas Got Talent, Texas Got Talent, and World of Dance Houston 2014. Each rehearsal and competition was so mind blowing and an eye opening experience. Seeing each member sweat, cry, and laugh, assured me how everything and every moment was worth it for these competitions.

Just recently they competed at World of Dance Houston 2015 for both Youth and Upper Division. In the Youth Division they received, best costume and fifth Place, and in the Adult Division they won fourth Place, and let me tell you, both of those divisions are not easy at all.

I can go on talking about them the entire time, but what I truly wanted to say is ...

Thank you to each and every one of you. Because of you, I'm doing things that I never thought possible and I have experienced things I would never before experience in my life. I met people that have influenced me in so many ways because of you. I was able to improve because of you, was able to grow because of you, and was able to learn because of each and everyone of you.

Thank you to Charlie, Zach, Collin, Melanie, Mikee, Rachel, Tommy, Danny, Frankie, Nick, Nicholas, Darius, Shelby, Mihkya, Cristian, Lucy, Sydney, Zealand, Natalie, Katelyn, and everyone else that's been a part, or is a part of this team.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
