With the term coming to a start, I thought it would be a good idea to start getting our brains working. My summer was spent catching up on a bunch of TV so I thought it would be good to transition with some mini documentary style videos.
You’ll learn something, but it won’t feel like that because they’re just YouTube videos!
SelfID: Gender
Seattle’s Yonnas Getahun, uses SelfID as a medium for diverse communities to come together and share their experiences. He is working on a series of videos, but "SelfID: Gender" really caught my attention. With celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner generating a dialogue on the subject of gender and what it means to be trans, we are left with many more questions than answers. This video offers a brief look into a collection of different people with varying genders, sexual orientations, and identities. Though each person gets very short camera time, the real message of this film is impactful: sexuality is not binary, rather is it a never-ending range of possibilities.
A Kiss Deferred
When envisioning a documentary, a cartoon never comes to mind. Upon discovering that this does indeed exist, I felt as if it were my duty to share it with those around me. "A Kiss Deferred" is an animated mini documentary about the childhood of a girl in 1990s Bosnia. She recounts the story of her first love and how it was lost amongst the turmoil in her country at the time. In no way is this a sappy love story. In fact, the love that she has for this boy is deeply engrained in her history, family, and Bosnian culture. The concept of love and the gravity it holds is explored through the eyes of this one girl and offers a slew of emotions as she recounts the tales of her past.
