Third Eye Blind has found its way back into the news this July for their performance in Cleveland where lead singer Stephan Jenkins antagonized a predominantly Republican audience. Later, TEB posted this statement on Facebook concerning the event:
The post was well received by fans and non-fans alike. A short time after that, the group released a new song, “Cop vs. Phone Girl,” about police brutality. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw “Third Eye Blind” on the Facebook “Trending” list for several days in a row. For as long as I’ve been an individual with my own thoughts and ideas (which began when I was 12), I have been a diehard fan of Third Eye Blind. My lifelong friend and I used to exchange favorite TEB lyrics in our 8th grade homeroom while we ignored our teacher’s glares. Ever since then, if the band graces a Cincinnati stage my old best friend and I will be in attendance of their amazing performance. It’s perhaps a little unusual that two millennials who, for the most part, missed the heyday of Third Eye Blind to be such devout followers, but I am certainly glad that we are. For all the other millennials who only know TEB hits like “Semi-Charmed Life” and “Jumper,” I, in collaboration with a few friends, compiled a list of some of Third Eye Blind’s lesser-known tunes that are worth a listen or two...or 10.
(In no specific order)
1. “Slow Motion.”
Psst, this has been my favorite TEB song since the 8th grade.
2. “Wounded.”
3. “Narcolepsy.”
4. “Forget Myself.”
5. “1000 Julys.”
6. “The Background.”
7. “Sharp Knife.”
8. “Misfits.”
9. “Motorcycle Drive By.”
10. “God of Wine.”
11. “Water Landing.”
12. “About to Break.”
13. “Why Can’t You Be.”
14. “Non-Dairy Creamer.”
Several times my friends and I have tried to determine why it is that we love Third Eye Blind so much. For a while I couldn’t quite put a finger on the perfect reason, but I think I have finally figured it out. It’s the band’s honesty that resonates with me so deeply. The transparency of their lyrics is obvious and it allows for a relationship to develop between musician and listener. Instead of vague lyrics with no apparent emotion (have you turned on the radio lately?), Third Eye Blind bleeds through their songs and reaches you, the individual, through the airwaves in a one-on-one intimate encounter.
Have I convinced you to be a Third Eye Blind fan yet?
Yes? Listen to all their full albums, you won’t be disappointed.
No? Are you sure you listened to that list of songs yet?
