So, why was I pissed? All great revolutions begin with one document, whether it be something long, short, something of value or something of little meaning. They are of history books and of times passed, but no one realizes that the document needed doesn’t need to be of ancient times. Any type of writing can explain the views of a larger group of people. So I’m not tacking this article up on a public building a la Martin Luther, I just simply hope that you post it to your “wall.” Ironic.
Millennials are in the deep pits right now. We can either stand back and do nothing, or we start a revolution of mixing words and actions.Trump supporters sought to make it pretty clear that someone or anyone has to stand up and do something right. We have been hidden from the idea of radical change for a while. Our parents and the generations before us taught us that the only way to success was through working through the ranks of businesses and economic industries that were corrupt. They never told us that there was strength in numbers. Education was no longer the great equalizer, we were born into an age that does not define an equal, it can define the way that we make definitions of each other.
Money was something that was destroying that equality. Don’t get me wrong, I love money. I love money and the ability to buy pizza whenever I feel like it. However, I didn’t like the fact that every article that I wrote was wanted for nothing. Almost all of the articles that took time, opinions, and four years of university education were completely unpaid. That education that I took out loans for and paid money for was in turn being shown in the unpaid labor that almost anyone with a URL was allowed to make. So, for the readers that are reading this, please understand that I was angry. It was the idea that I couldn't just write for beauty anymore because the fear of going broke had me writing Listicles.
Fear had replaced a lot of things. Fear of rejection had funded weight loss detoxes and NAKED palettes. Fear of being alone had funded gyms and time spent on Facebook uploading posts was to prove that we were creating memories. Fear of the unknown, however is the biggest fear of all, and it is funding the Baby Boomer generation to create hate. Yup, you got that right. The generation rolling around in dirt listening to Jimi Hendrix, a black man, play the National Anthem, want to create racism and fear of ideologies that we cannot understand. We as a generation need to wake up and realize that it is fear driving politics, suppressing our art and films, and creating the thought in our head that we are not good enough.
Fear of the future was also one. Realizing that not belonging to a specific identity, gender, or race could cause someone to hate someone. Hate me, hate my boyfriend, or hate my kids.
I was obsessed with the 1960’s revolutions as a kid. The thought of free love and free expression was appealing to the poet and writer in me, but where did all that go? Ironically it went away with the people that created the movement itself. Free expression is limited to race relations, while the art can only be famous if it adheres to the social restrictions that were placed by a previous generation.
So what is it now? Everyone can write, everyone can submit Listicles and claim that they’ve done something for society. Everyone can write a long ass Facebook Status of garbage Buzzfeed level academia, but why were we actually so pissed off? Why were people our age fighting for anything anymore?
Because we can’t grow. We can’t accept that America was ever great, it wasn’t. Artistic expression, movies, literature, and music was only great for those that could pay for it at first. And let’s be real, poets and artists are only accepted when they’re no longer making contributions.
So, that’s why. That’s why I’m pissed.
