If you've been on Facebook lately (of course you have) you've probably seen a slew of posts about people starting their new jobs and moving to new areas of the world now that the school year has ended. Are you one of these people? I am. Do you wish you were moving somewhere new?
Having just moved to Atlanta, GA right after graduating college, it's refreshing and inspiring to know I am not the only one to pack up everything and move somewhere new. This migrant behavior of young people just like me, is a characteristic associated with the Millennial Generation and it's a positive one. We move to seek opportunity and experiences.
The Mayflower Mover recently published an interesting study saying 51 percent of millennials moved to a new city, state or country for employment. In addition, 46 percent of millennials have moved to be with or find a romantic partner and 44 percent have moved in order to be closer to family. There's a lot of moving going on. So will you be the next person you know to make the move somewhere new?
I say 'why not' and many people from my generation would agree with me. Moving somewhere new is definitely not for everyone. It takes planning, confidence, drive and a willing to go outside of your comfort zone to leave the people and places you are familiar with behind. The desire of the unfamiliar and the exciting experiences ahead lure millennials down the path of a move.
Millennials are the New Age Vagabonds. Those who wander from place to place, but with a plan. Their plan may be far-fetched or highly underdeveloped, but it aligns with their hopes and dreams of an enjoyable life, steady income, traveling and a career they love. Finding a place you feel like you belong in can take some trial and error, just like relationships. But when it feels right, you know it, and you are happy and everything you went through was worth it.
So move around. Meet new people. Go new places. You won't be the only one doing so and there really does not have to be a high level of commitment to the place you plan to move to. With rent cycles lasting sometimes as short as a month, there is room to move. Millennials have recognized how beautifully transient life can be and they are taking advantage of it.
As cheesy as it sounds, you have a limited amount of time to do all you wish to do. Why wait? Life has its roadblocks that will inevitably get in the way, so take advantage of your flexibility while you can. Those you don't want to leave will still be there for you despite the distance and you can always move back or somewhere new if your move doesn't turn out to be what you hoped. Embrace the title of the Millennial Vagabond and see where life takes you.
