Recently, my lovely conservative friends on Facebook have taken to sharing articles talking about how whiny, sensitive, and childish the current generation is. They cite studies stating that when Millennials are faced with problems or differing viewpoints, they demand them to change in order to fit their idea of how it should be.

And I started to wonder, what’s so wrong with that? Why are the baby boomers complaining about raising strong willed, defiant, rebellious, radical thinkers that demand change?

Barack Obama has been quoted as saying that liberal arts college students should not be coddled and should be exposed to differing viewpoints. I do not disagree with that, but I do disagree with the argument that students should be exposed to these viewpoints and not state the fallacies within those differing viewpoints.

While being pushed through the public school system in high school, it was drilled into my head that higher-education was not only to give me a better quality of life but also a better understanding of life. If this is the case, what are we supposed to do with this higher understanding of life? Sit back and watch history repeat itself? Stand in silence as things go against what we have discovered? We will do neither of those things.

This is not the first time that college protestors were called overly sensitive and childish. Remember the Vietnam War protests? Remember the Civil Rights movement and the allies involved?

Every time those in higher education have backed a cause, they were on the right side of history. I’d like us all to remember that as the issues in America progress and college students are at the forefront of the protests.
