Why is it a "cool fad" for people (including some millennials...) to talk about how much the millennial generation (AKA Gen Y) sucks? I think we can all agree that each generation has flaws in different ways. For some reason, it's recently become a trend to bash Gen Y. I can't quite figure out why.

No, we aren't all lazy, and we don't all expect "participation trophies." I would bet that many people in the Gen X & Baby Boomer generations are lazier and less mature than lots of millennials. It's a very negative stereotype that has been stuck on us. But realistically, that stigma can be related to every generation. Millenials can be very hard working, just as other generations CAN be.
We aren't haters. In 2014, two-thirds of millennials supported gay marriage. This is higher than any other age group. It's the 21st century, people. If you don't agree with someone, fine. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to make their own choices. We have challenged gender roles, and fought for fair treatment for everyone. We partake in egalitarianism because we are diverse. In fact, we are the most diverse adult demographic group in American history. How cool is that?!
Studies have also shown that we are more politically active than other generations. We don't accept something because we are told to. We do our research, sign petitions, run community organizations, and share political stories and insights with others.
We're lazy? Well that's very interesting, considering that the high school graduation rate for millennials is 72 percent, which is the highest percentage in decades. Studies show that we are the most educated generation in history. Sure, some of us are lazy. But so are some people in the other generations. I have multiple jobs, I go to school full time, and I still always find time to volunteer in my community. I have many friends who do the same. So don't ever try to call me lazy or entitled, because those are two things I am not.
Even if I still haven't convinced you, it's not cool to bash a large group of people anyways. If you tell a lie often enough, it becomes the truth. Do you really want us, as the next generation of adults, to believe that we are idle and pompous? Didn't think so. Let's all be mature adults here and let the stereotypical stigmas go.
