When asked her response to music legend, Prince's death a year ago today, 20 year old Morgan responds: "oh right that guy died a year ago today. I can't believe it's been a year. I almost forgot!"
But who can blame her? According to her CNN app alerts, there were " literally about a million celebrity deaths last year."
But she, like many other millennials, will still post "RIP Prince" and put a sad emoji on all Prince tributes. When seeing Prince renditions, Morgan will act solemn and water drops will be placed on her cheeks. She wrongly mouths along to "Purple Rain" and pretends to enjoy the guitar solo, all while thinking "this guy is so old-- who is he and why is everyone so sad?"
What a curious response to the death of a revolutionary music icon, I think. To find out more, I, a prominent 45-year-old New York Times reporter, decided to set up an interview with a few millennials.
QUESTION: So you like "Purple Rain?" Have you seen the movie?
MILLENNIAL: Yeah I love "Purple Rain!" It's on my Spotify 'jams' playlist. I have it on repeat at least once a week.
Q: So I assume you've seen the movie, then?
M: There's a movie?
Q: What is your favorite Prince song?
M: uhhh... "Purple Rain"?
Q: Other than that one?
M: "Dancing in the Rain?"
Q: No, that's not...
M: "Singing in the Rain?"
Q: still no but nice try. Have you seen that movie?
M: wait that's a movie too?
Q: Never mind, let's try another one. What else do you listen to?
M: Oh well I'm super into music. I don't listen to the crap on the charts, my music taste is a lot more refined than that. I think music is terribly important as art. I mostly listen to the 1975, Nirvana, The Beatles...
Q: Wow, nice. What do you think about Prince's fashion choices?
M: They were nice. Very fashionable and purple. Super risky choices, but important for fashion as art. I like that he wore a lot of flare pants and heels, super trendy and brave, especially for the times.
Q: Yeah, totally agree. What else do you want to tell people about Prince?
M: Honestly, I didn't grow up with his music around. But that doesn't mean I don't respect him and admire what he represents for the older generations. I see pictures of him rocking golden heels and flare pants and I think that's pretty cool and I like how he is being genuine and being himself. That's inspiring and that's a good role model to have.
