Millennial Empowerment

We are millennials and we are strong, we are able.

Millennial Empowerment
Rebecca Lackey

Millennials, a name to describe those people born between 1980 and 2000. We are the Harry Potter generation, the generation to see marriage equality and sparking conversation about the LGBTQ community, and even if you don't personally agree with the laws passing or don't support the community in general, you must admit that we were a part of getting to see something unifying. We are getting to vote in one of the most controversial Presidential elections to date; it will be historic no matter who is elected. However, most millennials take credit for these life altering decisions without actually being a part of the conversation until the conversation became trendy. We just sit on our butts and wait to share something on Facebook, or retweet it on Twitter. This is one of the major problems with our generation, we are always following trends, waiting for trends to come to light, trying to start a trend. We don't stand up and start something just because we are passionate about it. If it is not a trend, that means we can't talk about it, which is a false mindset.

Rather than starting our own conversations to spark change, we wait for other people and piggy-back on their opinions. It is impossible for us to think for ourselves; we hide in our cell phones and wait for someone to tell us what to think. Wait for a viral video to spread around on our Facebook timelines. Constantly girls post about how "normal" girls act in comparison to you. But, newsflash, nothing is original anymore and some girls want to be the party girls, but others try to become the "not normal" girls. Why can't we all just be ourselves and not rely on others to dictate our actions? We don't have to follow the crowd and go with the flow, we should desire to stand out and stand different proud of what our individual personalities can contribute to our growing society.

Our generation is so capable. We could do so much. We have ample access to technology and transportation. We tend to be the most accepting generation, and we could really make racism go away if we try. We have so much ability to share our own ideals and get our opinions shared all over the world. In talking to other millennials, we want to show the world what we CAN do rather than the lazy and apathetic reputation that we are simply accepting. So get up! Do something! Show the world what our generation is capable of. Let's show the generations that gave us this technology and ability to be world changers that we are not just taking advantage of what they did for us, but that we are grateful and wish to excel further than they even thought we possibly could.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
