My mother is in her mid 50’s and my father is in his early 60’s. Most of my friends, at 22, think I have “old” parents, but all the time I have found this to be normal for me. Since I was a small child I always knew who Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Lynyrd Skynryd, The Who, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, and many other of the greatest bands to ever make music where. I was always the “weird one” out of my friends. The outspoken one who wasn’t afraid to hurt others feelings with my blunt comments. The little flower child. The daughter of two amazing baby boomers.
What none of them understood was that my parents grew up in the age where the rest of my friend’s parents weren’t even born yet. They were in a time period where they were free, they were alive, and they did what their heart told them. It can be a bit hard sometimes to relate because they are so stuck in their ways, but they will usually come around when they become educated on the specific subject that I am having a hard time getting through to them.
Now, in 2016, I am considered a carefree person and that I “walk to my own beat.” I never understood this until recently. Everyone does what he or she wants, don’t they? Apparently not. My rock and roll parents have always told me I can do whatever I want in life and they meant it. Like any parents, they will give me a life lesson or two when I need it, but they have never tried to stop my brothers or me from our dreams no matter how big or small they might be. They have been around when I went absolutely wild and not doing well in school. Now they are about to watch me graduate from school on time in a few months. Either way they have done an amazing job raising me and I hope to instill their way of life to my children someday.
Having baby boom parents is probably the coolest thing in the world. I’m blessed to have them and have learned from them. If you sit back and listen to what people from this generation have to say, you might just learn a thing or two on how to make the most out of your life. I know I have.
So thanks for being rad mom and dad. Ya’ll are the realest.
