It's no secret that the winter so far has been extremely mild, which bodes well for some but not the winter resorts around Michigan. In comparison to last year when resorts where fully open following thanksgiving, resorts around the state are struggling to open runs and even make snow to coat the hills that by now are usually filled with skiers and snowboarders. Looking forward, here are a few reports from commonly visited places throughout the state.
Caberfae Peaks
One of my personal favorites, Caberfae currently is running six different runs and making snow when possible. They plan to be open as long as the base is deep enough through the holidays.
Boyne Mountain
One of the most sought out destinations in northern Michigan is only offering four runs at the moment, with a base of 22 inches'. Out of the 60 runs, only four are open, with three out of 12 lifts running.
Crystal Mountain
Crystal is showing very light snowfall with a base currently at 16 inches. They have four out of 58 runs available and four lifts running at the moment.
Schuss Mountain
Shanty Creek Resorts are looking to officially open on Dec. 21, 2015, with limited runs and lifts available for the public. Snow-making will be in progress tonight as they prepare for the opening.
Treetops Resort
Officially opened on Dec. 20, 2015 with limited runs available and only one lift currently running. The base is sitting around 8-16 inches.
Nubs's Nob
Nub's Nob is currently open with four out of 53 trails available. The base is approximately 20 inches and has two lifts running.
As you can see, these resorts are struggling to draw in large crowds because of the lack of snowfall. Nobody wants to pay big money to go ski or snowboard on four runs at a resorts that typically has 60 available. The resorts hope to pick up more business as the winter weather moves forward.
