Those of us who played high school sports often reflect on that period of our lives as an awesome time that went by too fast. However, there are aspects of a high school athletic career that long outlast the career itself. Here are some signs that you were probably an athlete in high school.
1. You're basically immune to ibuprofen.
After regularly downing handfuls (or bottles) to get through practices and games in high school, you now regularly suffer through headaches because the little buggers don’t do a thing for you anymore.
2. You make everything a competition.
Just because your days of high school sports are behind doesn’t mean you’re any less of a competitor. You can take literally anything and make it a competition. Whatever it is, it’s imperative that you win.
3. You don't mind exercising.
Being active isn’t so much a chore as it is a part of who you are. Working out is an enjoyable experience—especially when compared to those sideline seventeens. If you survived four years of Christmas break conditioning, you can survive anything.
4. You'll always hate your rival school/town.
Even though it’s totally irrational, even hearing your rival team’s name will send a surge of anger through you. Like competitiveness, rivalries don’t cease to exist after graduation.
5. The only socks you own are crew socks.
Whether you’re going to the gym, school, or your cousin’s wedding, Nike Elites will always be the only reasonable choice.
6. You have the ability to fall asleep just about anywhere.
Thanks to years of long bus trips, you’ve developed the nifty skill of being able to fall asleep in any space bigger than two square feet. You never know when this might come in handy, but when it does, you’ll be ready to contort your body into some of the most unnatural and uncomfortable positions imaginable and fall right asleep like it ain’t no thing.
7. Half of the clothes in your wardrobe are emblazoned with your high school's logo.
...and you’d still wear it with pride.
8. You were somewhat of a local celebrity.
Especially if you went to high school in a small town. Every local old guy and their dog knew exactly who you were, and were probably just as proud of you as they were of their own children.
9. Sometimes, your body feels like that of a 90-year-old.
Your body feels way older than it actually is due to years of constant wear and tear, and you don’t remember a time when you had good ankles. You can’t even imagine how sore you’ll be when you’re actually 90 years old, but you’d never trade your four years of high school sports for fully functional knees—or anything.
10. Many of your friends were your teammates at one point.
Being on a team is a bonding experience like no other, and to this day, your teammates are still some of your very best friends.
Here I am with my longtime teammate and lifelong best friend, Winter, who helped me brainstorm for this article.
