It’s that time of the year… again. Yes, midterms. Although they’re not as bad as finals, midterms are lot worse than regular exams, and they begin to consume your life around the month of October. Now, if you attend a school like mine, you’ll be grateful for what is called a Fall Break. It's usually not that long; but four days of stress-free relaxation or spending time with family is more than enough time for the average college student to recuperate.
However, when you have midterms to look forward to AFTER your fall break, the entire idea of the break becomes obsolete. Here are four reasons why giving midterms should be required BEFORE fall break.
1. Professors will have time to grade
Many professors are constantly having to rearrange their schedules and syllabi in order give students back their grades on tests and papers before the next big assignment. If they give their exams before the break, they’ll have enough time to grade papers and enjoy the break themselves.
2.
Students actually have a break after MidtermsThis is pretty obvious. With no midterms study for
during the break, it leaves time to sleep, hang out with friends, travel, see
family, or Netflix binge watch "Grey’s Anatomy."
3. Everyone can come back refreshed and motivated
The whole point of the fall break is just that; it's a break. After the break is over, both students and professors will return ready to take on the next half of the semester.
4. Students can know where they stand for the rest of the semester
Once they’re back and motivated, students will get
their grades and really buckle down. The next big thing aside from projects and
minor tests are finals. You might not have gotten the grade you wanted on
the midterm, but there’s still a chance to work hard, commit yourself, and do
better on the final.
Surviving college just isn't about being smart, it's about having enough mental strength to make it through the four or five years it takes to earn your degree, and breaks from school are a huge part of gaining that mental strength. Exams suck, but they're a huge part of our educational system. Once we made the decision to come to college, we basically agreed to giving away hours of our lives studying and/or having nervous breakdowns about studying, so it's only fair that they make it somewhat easier on us.
Some of us are lucky enough to take our midterms before the break, but for those like me, who have nothing but tests and papers to look forward to, don't worry. There are only 34 days left until Thanksgiving Break! Study on.
