UVA has many traditions that separates it from others institutions around the country. Those special events like Block Party and Foxfield help alleviate the pain of classes and tests that every single one of us struggles through. But sometimes, there are no classes to worry or fret about, no tests to cram for in first floor Clem. Many of you call this magical time of year summer break, and it holds one of the best weekends UVA has to offer: Midsummers. The sun is out, birds are chirping, and somewhere country music is blasting from a front porch. Yes, for all you newcomers to Midsummers, it’s going to be a wild weekend filled with fun, friends, and a whole lot of Fetty Wap. Don’t be that guy who misses Midsummers.
During the summer, the University of Virginia is a calmer, milder version of its hectic school year. Many students stay in town for jobs or classes and experience first hand what Charlottesville has to offer. New friends and acquaintances are made, and those everlasting summer memories are cherished. But nothing beats seeing everyone you know from school back in town. Old friends, new friends put aside. Everyone just wants to have a good time.
Midsummers festivities begin on Friday, with many returners ready to socialize and enjoy the Virginia weather. Take advantage of the summer weather and grill up some burgers and dogs. Invite everyone over for corn hole and blast music at the top of it volume. Make sure to hang around Wertland and 14th St. during the evening and night. Old classmates will be all over the place, so don't waste any time! Get your group, and go all over the place. Don’t have too much fun too fast though; there is still Saturday to enjoy.
Saturday is a great day because many students are free from their summer class and have just finished their exams. They are looking to let off some steam. This is a great day to go out to the quarry and jump off a cliff (literally). Go for the outdoors experience and come back to UVA later on ready to chill and eat. I didn’t take advantage of this option last year, but it’s a very popular activity and it comes highly recommended. The weekend is packed with students, young and old, and never has a dull moment. Definitely look forward to Saturday as an outdoors day, and don't waste it stuck in an apartment. Come back to school to be ready to party with anyone and everyone. Many people are out and about, ready to find the next memory or Snapchat story to post, because if you aren’t Snapchatting the party, did you really even attend one?
It is important to always be safe and stay in your groups. Don’t get separated and find yourself randomly at a party where you don’t know anyone. But most of all enjoy the return of UVA social life to summer. Midsummers is one of the best weekends of summer and you don’t want to miss it!
