10 Middle School Trends We All Regret
Colorado School Grades

For some bizarre reason, middle schoolers of 2015 are very fashionable and very cool. Sometimes I scroll through my Facebook and Instagram and I'm always disappointed to see that middle schoolers are more fashionable than I am, and have a cooler Instagram than I do. In my case, when Facebook brings up "memories" from when I was in middle school, I cringe at the outfit I was wearing and the posts that I made. I'm convinced that middle schoolers of today are actually cool because they have references to guide them, like Pinterest to show them fashion trends and unique ways to take pictures on Instagram. When I was in middle school, these sort of technologies and social media sites were just starting to come out, so we did not use them responsibly and posted whatever we thought was the cool thing to do. Here are some common trends for middle schoolers of 2005-2009. May these trends forever rest in peace.

1. The classic "Picnik" edited photo

Nothing said cool like uploading a picture of you and your friends to Picnik. Add some inspirational quotes, inside jokes, and lots of color.

2. An entire Facebook album of you and your friends' "Photo Booth" pictures

I was a repeat offender of this trend. Mac computers were a cool thing to have, especially when they came with a front camera and the new and exciting "Photo Booth" app. With all of the different filters to choose from, it provided hours of endless narcissism.

3. The feather trend

Nothing said cool and hipster like putting a feather in your hair that everyone else already had.

4. Shutter shades

Could you see through them? Not really. Were they cute? Not at all. Why did I wear them to a middle school dance? These are the questions that keep me up at night.

5. Any shirt from Aeropostale, Hollister, or Abercrombie that had the company name on the front

I specifically remember being hype to wear this shirt to school the day after I bought it. We all should have been paid by these companies for being walking advertisements.

6. Wearing your UGGs until you couldn't possibly wear them anymore

The day you finally got a pair of UGGs was an exciting one. That excitement lasted until they ended up falling apart, but we middle schoolers were relentless and continued to wear them anyway.

7. Tagging about 30 friends on Facebook in one of these:

8. Mirror selfies

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a lot of problems with selfies. But when I was in middle school, no one had iPhones. Instead, you pulled out your Kodak camera in front of the mirror. An early 2000s version of the front camera.

9. Going to hang out at the mall

As a middle schooler, my idea of a fun day would be begging my mom to drive me and my squad to the mall. Sometimes we wouldn't even shop, we would just ~hang out~ there for hours...and you always remembered to bring your Vera Bradley cross body purse.

10. Going to a middle school dance

A very normal thing to do when you're in middle school, but middle school should not have dances. They basically just consist of a bunch of pre-teens with bad hygiene jumping around in a circle to "Cotton Eyed Joe." But you'll never forget your first slow dance to "Hero" by Enrique Iglesias.

Thank you middle school years, for always providing me with a good laugh when reflecting on my past.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
