British artist of Sri Lankan descent, M.I.A. has decided to get up close and personal with the West's lack of action during the recent debate over how to handle the rising increase of migrants.
Born in London but growing up in Sri Lanka with her family, M.I.A. experienced a civil war in which her father fought in. Constantly moving around and eventually being a part of a mass migration of Sri Lankans out of the country. Recently coming out with a self-made song and music video, "Borders", M.I.A. has brought the West's many issues to light - something that celebrities and other non-political public figures have been avoiding.
In her music video, featuring refugees climbing fences and being piled on boats, M.I.A. sheds some light on politician's recent lack of initiative in dealing with this national crisis and the rising idea that fences need to be put up by individual countries. As she stands by these hundreds of refugees, she sings very simple yet powerful lyrics, asking "borders - what's up with that?" and so on.
Another aspect of M.I.A.'s new groundbreaking single is how she relates this very serious political crisis to Western pop culture today. In recent interviews she states that people throughout the world are naturally drawn to the West, believing that if they can somehow make it there, only then will they find happiness. She speaks of her Sri Lankan uncles constantly watching Hollywood James Bond movies and dreaming of a day when they could drive sports cars and "be James Bond".
"I think it's cause and effect... as a musician, I feel like we are part of promoting ideas to people. You know, ultimately we fight to get what we do in the West into the homes and the screens of every single person on the planet. We want to make money off it, and you want to sell 50 million Taylor Swift records to people in Africa. Obviously, some of the kids are gonna say, 'Okay, yeah, I want the dream,' and you've got migrants who believed in the aggressiveness of our sale of democracy. We can't really blame people when they are ready to embrace it." -M.I.A.
Reading further into her lyrics, M.I.A. also calls attention to our modern day need for "smartphones", "being bae" and "breaking the internet", leading people everywhere to question society's beliefs and lack of values. M.I.A. is influencing viewers who normally don't know or care about politics, but enjoy music and pop culture to stop and think for a moment about everything that the two have in common. After watching this music video, how insane and confused this world is becoming is up for you to decide.
