A Messy Room Means A Creative Mind

Sometimes a tidy room doesn't always help.

A Messy Room Means A Creative Mind
Kayla Ammons

People with messy rooms tend to be more creative. I consider myself a creative person, and my room is always a disaster. My mom has been yelling and nagging at me for years to tidy up, but even when I do, it doesn’t take long for my room to transform back into a mess.

Part of the reason creative people have messy rooms is because they’re so busy thinking. I can never seem to turn my brain off, and when I try to clean, I end up running back to my laptop to write down a new story idea or grabbing my camera and going outside. A creative mind is always running, trying to come up with as many ideas as it can. There’s no time to be clean and organized when you’re trying to write down ideas or make them happen. A reason why my room is messy is because I tend to throw down what I was working on wherever there’s room and hurry to my next project.

Messy rooms can also help come up with new ideas. Sometimes the brain just needs a change of scenery, and when you have a messy room, there’s always something new the brain can focus on. In a clean room, it’s hard to come up with new ideas when you’ve been staring at the same desk or bed for hours. When I was in high school, my English teacher always gave us the option of going out into the hall or even another classroom while we were writing. If she wanted us to write about something specific, like the outdoors, she would take us out of the classroom so we could write in a different environment. Doing this gave us new ideas to use in our works. A messy room on it’s own just has so much to look a, it can have the same affect.

A creative mind can also get distracted easily. Whenever I try to clean, I always find old notebooks filled with stories, and I end up reading them for the rest of the day. I may also find things I’ve forgotten about, like old trinkets and such, and they steal my attention away for the day. Memories help me create new ideas, which is why it’s hard for me to clean and put my old things away. When I try, I get distracted like I said. When your mind is always moving, it’s hard to focus on something boring like cleaning. Creativity is fun, which is why fun things always distract my brain.

Sometimes I feel really bad that my room isn’t clean, but I forget all about it when I begin to create things and come up with new ideas. So if you feel bad for having a messy room, don’t worry. It’s just because you’re creative, and creativity is a wonderful thing. If you still feel bad, remember that you’re not alone. Albert Einstein was actually known for his messy desk, and half the time he didn’t even care if his clothes matched. All in all, a messy room isn’t anything to be ashamed of. Although, you should still listen to your mom if she tells you to clean.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
