Mental Health Days

Everyone gets stressed and sometimes you just need to take a mental health day to recooperate and breathe. Never be ashamed, mental health is something that we need to start talking about.

The urge to skip class is a legitimate struggle in college. No one is there to send you to the office if they catch you and no one is there to tell you that no, you should not skip class because it is going to seriously affect your GPA if done often enough. These are things that college students have to find out on their own, but hopefully won’t skip class enough for it to be a problem. Although skipping class is generally not the best thing to do, sometimes you just need to take a mental health day.

There is a very real stigma around mental health, many people think that having a mental illness doesn’t really mean that you are sick, but that is definitely not the case. There are some nights where I can’t get myself to sleep because I have too many crazy thoughts running through my mind, there are days where I honestly cannot find it within myself to put on a genuine smile, and there are some days where I just cannot get myself out of bed. Sometimes you need a mental health day or even a half day to help you get through the week, and that is okay.

I don’t condone skipping class purely for the fact that you don’t want to go or that you don’t want to do your work, but I definitely won’t deny someone a mental health day. You don’t even need to have been diagnosed with a mental illness to take a day to yourself. Everyone knows that stress can have some seriously negative effects both mentally and physically. Therefore, it’s totally ok to know when you need to take a day off and to do so. Catch up on your work; make sure you’re getting the sleep that you need; use a mental health day to take care of yourself.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
