Memorial Day: A Day To Honor Those Who Have Died Or A Three-Day Weekend?

Are Americans losing the real meaning of Memorial Day?

To many, Memorial Day is considered to be the start of summer and is often the first warm weekend of the year. Adults and children alike have a three-day weekend, which often prompts families to go on vacation for the weekend. If one does not go on vacation, there are still plenty of things to do. Many head to the beach, since it's the first weekend they are officially open. Others flock to pool clubs or country clubs. Those who are fortunate enough to have pools in their backyards often open their pools for the first time and host barbecues. Not only is Memorial Day used as an excuse to gather together to eat, drink and relax, companies have used the national holiday to promote business. Many large retail stores, car dealers and just about any other business you can think of often advertise “Memorial Day sales," encouraging customers to go shopping.

Most will agree that having an extra day off, going on vacation, getting deals while shopping and relaxing with family and friends are all enjoyable things. But we as Americans are forgetting the real reason why we are able to do all of these things and why the last Monday in May is a National Holiday. In the United States, we are free to say and do what we want when we want. We do not have to worry about being overthrown by another country or our government being taken over by a ruthless dictator. However, this freedom comes at a cost, and that cost is the lives of many men and women who have fought for our country in defense of freedom. Memorial Day is a time to remember all the men and women who perished in combat. Americans should use this time to honor and reflect on the sacrifices made by these men and women.

So, while you are laying on the beach, vacationing, or having a barbecue with family and friends, remember all those who gave their lives for our country and our freedom. Fly a flag in front of your home and attend ceremonies in honor of those who have died. Remember the real meaning of Memorial Day: a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered and honored.

Bruce Springsteen's Top 7 Lyrics

Everything Bruce says in his classic rock songs.

bruce springsteen album cover born in the usa

Anyone who was born and raised in New Jersey (or anywhere really) knows of Bruce Springsteen, whether or not they like him is a whole other situation. I hope that his hundreds of classic rock songs and famous high energy performances, even in his sixties he can put on better concerts than people half his age, are at least recognizable to people of all ages. Love him or hate him (I identify with the former) you have to admit that some of his songs and interviews have inspirational quotes and lyrics.

New England Summers Are The BEST Summers

Why you should spend your next summer in New England.

Marconi Beach

Three years ago, I chose to attend college in Philadelphia, approximately 360 miles away from my small town in New Hampshire. I have learned many valuable lessons away from home, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in Pennsylvania. One thing that my experience has taught me, however, is that it is absolutely impossible to beat a New England summer.

Yes, the math major is doing a math-related post. What are the odds? I'll have to calculate it later. Many people have probably learned about the Fibonacci sequence in their high school math classes. However, I thought I would just refresh everyone's memories and show how math can be beautiful and apply to physical things everywhere around us with stunning examples.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.
