Life is loud. Each night the sirens and trucks and drunk students eddying the streets below my room seem to amplify, just as the majority of our music. But here are the quiet songs from the dressing room, earphones of the film studies major walking beside you. Here are six albums from this year that will soothe your aching ears.
1. “Collection” Soccer Mommy
Best Song: Allison
“Collection” is a quick listen, only twenty nine minutes long, but each song has it’s own unique sound and message, which can be particularly tricky with this genre. Also, Soccer Mommy’s voice is listening to warm velvet.
2. “Somersault” Beach Fossils
Best Song: Down the Line
“Somersault” is thirty four straight minutes of surprising minimalism, which is reflected in the all white, except for Beach Fossils in red, album cover. All eleven songs blur together into a perfect dream.
3. “If Blue Could Be Happiness” Florist
Best Song: If Blue Could Be Happiness
The title tells all for Florist’s latest album. Listening to “If Blue Could Be Happiness” is like listening to your favorite warm toned color.
4. “Yours Conditionally” Tennis
Best Song: Baby Don’t Believe
Tennis sounds like Blondie if Blondie was brunette and curly and, conditionally, yours.
5. “Soft Spots” Adult Mom
Best Song: Full Screen
“Soft Spots” is a short burst of Adult Mom’s classic indie vocals with, just as the title implies, a little more softness.
6. “A Place I’ll Always Go” Palehound
Best Song: If You Met Her
Palehound’s gentle, raspy voice coexists with her chaotic lyrics in a way that calms a wide variety of emotions.
