As everyone probably already knows, there was a beautiful royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19th. Like many others, I was extremely excited to watch the wedding and was not disappointed by the adorable looks that were shared between Harry and Meghan throughout the ceremony. However, the classiness of Meghan's dress, the sparkle of the jewelry and the glamor of all the lovely hats wasn't the only reason that I was thrilled to watch everything about the wedding. Meghan Markle's marriage to Prince Harry was history in the making and I was not going to be the one to miss it.
Not only did the couple go against several smaller royal traditions throughout their wedding, including holding hands during the ceremony, many significant aspects of who Meghan is completely go against what is typically expected among members of the royal family.
Meghan is American born, which came as a surprise because for many years the royal family was not given permission to marry Americans. She is biracial, so her marriage to Harry is a powerful step in the right direction when it comes to breaking down racial barriers and bringing two different cultures together.
Meghan is also an actor, which can be seen as a more promiscuous title than Princess Diana being a Lady and Kate Middleton being a commoner. And Meghan has also been married in the past when marrying someone who was divorced was not allowed for royalty in the past.
Watching Meghan become a duchess despite her differences to Prince Harry and the royal family was like watching a fairytale story come true. But what I'm most excited for is to see how Meghan's legacy carries on throughout her time in the royal spotlight. I have a feeling this is just the beginning of hearing about how Meghan makes a difference because I can see her passion for gender and racial equality being a spark for change.
