At the USF Odyssey, I've been given a section of our platform to share my thoughts, discoveries, and ideas in an attempt to represent USF. Recently I've been thinking about what this means. Maybe the best way to show USF isn't just through what I'm thinking about, but what you all are doing. I've been fortunate enough to have met some pretty amazing people since I started school here in August. I would love to let the readers of the Odyssey see the people that truly make up the USF community. With this, I've decided to embark on a "Meet USF" series, showcasing the people who make our school what it is.
So for our first installment, I'd like you all to meet Mary Walsh.
This is Mary. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mary is in her sophomore year at USF as an International Studies and Spanish Major. I first met Mary through Kappa Alpha Theta right after I pledged. Later, I found out that she teaches a yoga class at Koret, so I dropped by to see what her practice was like and she's been kicking my butt ever since!
First, I wanted to know how she got into yoga. She told me that during her senior year of high school she was cheerleading and taking some yoga classes. That year, she decided to sign up for yoga instructor training. Through teaching, Mary has fallen more in love with yoga. She loves teaching at Koret because there are people her age, people of every level of experience, and everyone is excited to be there. I also asked if she has any goals for her own yoga practice. She replied that she wants to reach 500 teaching hours and visit a yoga house in Thailand or India someday. Mary teaches her class every Monday and Wednesday at 7:30, and I really recommend trying a class.
Mary is also a member of Kappa Alpha Theta's Eta Upsilon chapter here at USF. She joined Theta to try to find a community and a friend group on campus. She told me that so far her Theta experience has been great and she's found the best female friendships of her life through our chapter.
Lastly, I asked how her experience at USF has been so far. Mary explained that she chose USF for different reasons originally. Her first semester was a little scary because USF isn't the typical college environment every freshman expects. As she continued to find her community and saw everything San Francisco had to offer, Mary became more excited about her time at USF. Overall, USF has been unpredictable but she says it feels right to be here.
Fun fact: "I have a bar in my basement named after my dog# Midwest"
Thank you so much Mary for being my first "Meet USF"!
