Music. We all love it. Whether you’re a diehard Belieber or a straight-up metal head, we all have our preferences. Music soothes our souls when we’re feeling blue. It carries us through tough times. It helps us realize that we aren’t alone when it comes to break-ups or heartache or painful changes in our lives. It also dances around with us when a celebration is in order. It aids us in rejoicing happy moments. So, while we’re jamming out to good ol’ classic rock or some My Chemical Romance, we’re letting these well-known bands’ hard work enter our lives for the better.
However, as a music journalist by night, I’ve had the pleasure of finding some extraordinary bands hiding in the recesses of the underground scene. So, without further ado, I’d like to introduce you to a few of my favorites.
This first band hails from the starry state of California. Fronted by Mixi Demner, metal/rock band, Stitched Up Heart is quickly burrowing its way into the hearts of millions of music junkies. At first glance, you probably wouldn’t expect petite Mixi to have such a powerful voice — but this musician is a powerhouse. On stage, Stitch Up Heart’s music and performances will worm their way into your body; their drum beats will replace your pulse while wild melodies flow through your veins. Off stage, however, the band makes sure to make friends with any audience member who approaches them — this band refuses to consider their supporters as “fans” — but “friends.”
Next up is a band composed of some older, wiser rockers. The band Blackberry Smoke of Atlanta, Georgia, offers a southern twist to the rock ‘n’ roll genre. Everyone could use a little southern comfort — right? While these seasoned musicians sometimes offer that mellow taste, they often switch things up and offer something a little more fiery. Think smoked barbecue ribs nestled beside a sweet ear of corn during one of those summer cookouts. These musicians pack a powerful punch, what with their hot beats and sweet ‘n’ sour lyrics — no one can resist them. And while these guys aren’t necessarily “underground,” they certainly deserve more attention.
And last but not least, meet the dynamic duo that makes up the band One-Eyed Doll. Kimberly Freeman (vocals/guitar) and Jason Rufuss Sewell (drums) put their all into their band. While most of the popular bands write their music and tour, these two write music, tour, pack/ship their merch, and make their products. One-Eyed Doll fans are certainly spoiled by Kimberly, who even takes the time to chat with fans on Twitter. Even though the two spend a lot of time on running their shop and touring, their music is superb — but don’t even try to fit them into a specific genre. They offer an array of music from Goth to punk to metal to something that sounds almost like show tunes. There’s something in their music catalog for everyone. Well, other than rap. And if there’s an opportunity to see these two live — take it. No words can describe Kimberly’s electric performance. There’s no need for pyrotechnics or special effects! Once the first chord is struck, I promise you won’t be bored.
So, whether you’re wallowing in your room or vibrating with good news in your car, before you pop on one of those better-known bands, give one of these groups a try (or all three)! I promise you won’t be disappointed. And who knows? Maybe you’ll discover a new favorite band when listening. Perhaps you’ll fall in love with Kimberly’s angelic voice and fun quirks. Maybe you’ll be energized through Mixi’s powerhouse vocals — or maybe you’ll be inspired to throw a barbecue and chill while listening to Blackberry Smoke. And maybe — just maybe — you’ll feel compelled to go on out and see them live next time they’re in your neck of the woods.
