Whether we are asking ourselves these questions or someone else, there is always a more complex reason for asking. Yes, I do care about you. Yes, I do want to know how your life is. But sometimes we all just get in the moods where the idea of asking someone a question can either seem like a chore or, there is an actual specific reason I asked you this specific reason at this specific time. Maybe this is just me, but I’m sure I’m not alone on this on.
1. What I’m asking: Do you want to do something today?
What I really mean: I have so much to do, yet I don't feel like doing any of it. All I want to do is stay in bed for the next few hours, scroll through Instagram and put off all of my responsibilities for a little while longer. However, we said we would hang out a week ago and it still has yet to happen. If we don't see each other today will we ever see each other again?
3. Question: Should I eat this?
What I really mean: I know I really shouldn’t eat this because it has no nutritional value and there’s a wide variety of foods out there that are much better for me, but it doesn’t matter because even if I shouldn’t eat this, I’m going to eat this.
4. Question: Can you call me?
What I really mean: It’s literally so much easier to hit the answer button then to find you in my phone and call you, I’m just going to let you do all the hard work.
5. Question: Are you busy?
What I really mean: This question is complex. There really is no point to texting somebody this question. You can find out if somebody is busy by using common sense and seeing if they reply quickly or not. If you ask somebody this question in person, it is also pointless. Literally, look at the person. Are they doing anything or not? If they’re doing something, they’re probably busy. If they aren’t doing anything, I’d assume they aren’t busy.
6. Question: Are you hungry?
What I really mean: This shouldn’t even be a question.
7. Question: Do you want to do me a favor?
What I really mean: I don’t want to get up, I don’t feel like doing something I have to do, I’m just going ask someone nicely to do this for me so I don’t have to lift a finger.
8. Question: Can I tell you something?
What I really mean: I know I’m capable of telling you this, I don’t even know why I just asked this question.
9. Question: How was your day?
What I really mean: I’d rather not sit here in awkward silence so this is my pathetic attempt to break it.
10. Question: Did you hear about so-and-so?
What I really mean: Let's be honest, everyone on the planet says they hate gossip, but what is the one thing everyone is guilty of at times? Gossiping.
11. Question: How are things with your boyfriend/girlfriend?
What I really mean: I know how badly you want to talk about your significant other so let’s just get this conversation over with sooner than later.
So, if you didn't know what the real meaning behind the questions you've probably been asked on a daily basis, now you do.
