An LA-based meal delivery service called mytable has just hit Austin and is offering free meals to the public through Nov. 15.
The service allows people to order meals through an app available for iPhone and Android from local chefs, with meals normally ranging from $6 to $12 and delivery set at $2.99, tip included, according to Margaret Laney, the company’s chief marketing officer. To take advantage of the promotion, one just needs to download the app and order. They’ll be charged just the delivery fee or can pick up their order at the chef’s location and avoid payment altogether. The offer is capped at two meals per week.
Laney said after seeing a lot of success in LA, the company chose Austin as its second location because of the culinary and tech culture.
“Austin is a foodie town,” she said. “We just wanted to come here and kind of plant roots in what we consider a kind of food innovator city.”
Laney said the company is unique in both its pricing and offering. She said the chefs range from award-winning cooks to culinary students and include people with great recipes that can’t work in the service industry as easily, like stay-at-home moms. She said that customers can customize their orders by communicating with the chefs directly on the app and stressed that using the app puts money back into the local economy, with 70 to 80 percent of the revenue from sales going back to the chefs.
“It’s exactly like ordering from Favor, but instead of ordering from a restaurant you’re ordering from a local chef, and it’s a lot cheaper,” Laney said.
Laney said all chefs are required to have food manager or serve safe licenses, but can cook wherever they like. She said all meals are taste-tested and approved by the company.
Laney said users on the app also get their own promo code, which they can share with others to score a free meal each time someone new to the app uses their code.
“There are three people in LA that have gained 50 to 70 meals for free,” she said.
