Social justice, identity, and the planet overlap and interact in so many ways – we need to address them all together.

When I arrived in D.C. on Sunday, June 4th, I thought there would be a cloud of gray hanging over the politically divisive and antagonistic capital. On Monday, June 5th, I found all the light I and so many others needed at the Newseum for MCON 2017.

MCON is a conference for those who "give a damn about social change and want to turn their interests into action." It was there that I found a diversity of opinions, overwhelming goodness, sincere gratefulness, and movers and shakers. From

While the issues were pressing and sometimes depressing, there was only hope and brightness at the conference. As Margaret Huang, Executive Director of Amnesty International quoted: "It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness." MCON attendees could easily find new ways to light their metaphorical candles. The toughest part is not so much the tools it takes to build a fire but the motivation to start and stay motivated.

In my time at MCON, I came up with a few commitments for myself as an individual to a member of planet earth.

1. As an individual, I will practice kindness and compassion to others by listening to their stories and sharing my own.

2. As a member of my family, I will take time to be present with my siblings and parents and encourage them to be attentive to national and global issues.

3. As a resident of my neighborhood, I will support local businesses and public spaces that are adding beauty to the area like the parks and performance spaces for recreation and entertainment.

4. As a New Yorker, I will volunteer with New York groups such as GrowNYC and the High Line because they support issues I am passionate about -- sustainability, environmental awareness, and community building.

Along the way, I hope to find other groups I can support by giving my time and effort to their causes.

5. As an American, I will remain informed and critical of problems that persist and new ones that arise.

I will be an active participant in my country by exercising my right to vote (intelligently and knowingly) and use my voice to influence others.

6. As a global citizen, I will contribute monetarily to different organizations around the world every month.

MCON served as a reminder that we can all be more involved and invested in the places we live, that we can all be change-makers in this world, that we can all build a better future for everyone, and that we can learn more and grow from who we once were.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
