Mattel announced on Jan. 28, that Barbie will now come in three new body types (tall, petite, and curvy), seven skin tones, 22 eye colors, and 24 hairstyles. This is the first time in Barbie’s 57 years that the iconic doll gets a major makeover.
The modification was revealed on the cover in the latest issue of Time Magazine with the headline “Now can we stop talking about my body?” Since the first Barbie came out, the doll has been constantly criticized by the media and society. It was only a matter of time that a change had to occur.
After years of being criticized for the doll’s unrealistic body proportions, the brand is changing in order to promote diversity and a realistic body image.
Evelyn Mazzocco, Barbie Senior Vice President & Global General manager, said, "We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand - these new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them - the variety in body type, skin tones and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them.”
With sales down the last couple of years, Mattel was motivated to make a change. Starting with the doll’s look in order to satisfy parents who want their children to grow up with a body-positive role model. Now girls can have dolls that look like them as opposed to have a doll with unattainable body standards.
Although the change has received many positive responses from consumers, there are some of those who are skeptical about the transformation. Among those unconvinced is actress Kristie Alley, who tweeted:
However, this is not the end of the original Barbie, which will continue to be available in stores and online.
The new dolls are available online on Shop.Mattel.com and will be available in stores in March 2016.
