June 26, 2015. A monumental day for the LGBT community. A beautiful day in America. Gay marriage is legal in all states. This is without a doubt the biggest obstacle for the LGBT community to overcome, and it's been done. But we have a lot more to do as a society.
I am a fairly sheltered 18-year-old. I have much of the world to experience and there is a lot I need to learn. My age does not take away from my understanding of what love is, however. Love is love. It is a law now. But the next step we must take will be much harder to conquer.
"Gay marriage" is a term I do not like. A marriage between two men or two women is simply a marriage. It is not a "gay" marriage. Yes, we refer to it as such to clarify. However, a lot of people still do not see a marriage between a woman and a man equal to a marriage between two men. Years and years of white, straight male privilege has done this and many other oppressive things to our society. It is our job to change the negative energy surrounding LGBTs.
It is an incredibly beautiful time for America. We are getting there. There are still many rights that gays do not have that straight people do, but this is the biggest battle and we have won it. I hope that I live to see a day in which everyone is genuinely equal -- a world in which no one is superior. A world in which we do not assume one is straight when he or she is born. A world in which gays do not have to "come out." A world in which a son can bring home a boyfriend to his mother who will not be appalled, only excited. I hope to see the day that gay marriage is just marriage. Love is love.
The amount of gay couples who have been denied the right to adopt in the past has exceeded the number of children needing adoption. This means thousands of children will soon have loving homes. It is absolutely beautiful.
So yes, I am proud of America for finally legalizing gay marriage. I am also hoping that we can accept that gay marriage and straight marriage are equivalent. The day we lose the gay in front of gay marriage is the day we have truly won.
Every human is deserving of love. To all the LGBT out there, congratulations. My heart is happy for you. You've gained the rights that I was born with. I can't begin to understand your struggles, but I can hope and fight for your equality. You are beautiful and worthy of love just as much as anyone else.
