Ah, the movies! A place we can all escape for an hour or two and take our minds off life. We all have movies we enjoy and as it is summer time, we at the Marist Odyssey Community want to give you our opinions on our favorite movies to watch over the summer.
1. Saw
My suggestion is Saw! Everyone needs a good scare every once in a while, and it really makes you think. Also I love the theme song--it gets stuck in your head, but in a good way!
2. The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club! It's a classic that's both hilarious and explores how different people can come together under certain circumstances. It shows the theme of "you can't judge a book by its cover," and also, who doesn't love the credit song?
3. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
If you're looking for a quality movie, always--I mean always--go with, Me and Earl and The Dying Girl! It's a really cute and nice indie film that really speaks to enjoying and living your life, but even so, truly cherishing works of arts we have as our loved ones. It's a story to truly open your eyes to things we take for granted.
- Justin Camero
4. Nicholas Sparks-based Movies
Any movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel always gets me in a summer mood. The beach is like a required component for every one of his stories and they always get me excited for summer and vacations!
- Alison Buzzelli
5. You've Got Mail
You've Got Mail. It's a classic rom-com movie about Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) and Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) who fall in love through anonymous AOL messages. But the plot thickens when Joe is building a Barnes and Noble type bookstore right across the street from Kathleen's tiny Renaissance-like bookstore which she took over after her mother passed away called, "Shop Around The Corner." This is a great movie to cuddle up to if you are having a tough day because not only is it sweet, funny, and cute, but the ending is not what you expect it to be!
6. Guardians of the Galaxy
My recommendation is Guardians of the Galaxy. Sure, this may be a Marvel film, but it is a film that all generations can enjoy. It includes music from the 1980s that even kids of my age can enjoy, has a hilarious cast, and has quite a bit of action. Plus, who doesn't love Baby Groot?
7. What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
What's Eating Gilbert Grape: kind of a tear-jerker, so be prepared to cry, but it's a very real and raw movie that covers a lot of different topics that most movies don't like to talk about, i.e. mental illness, obesity, and broken family units. It stars Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, and I just think it's a movie everyone should see.
- Raquelle Rocco
8. Moana and Heathers
Okay, so there are two movies I'd suggest: Moana and Heathers. Moana, because it's oceanic and empowering and summer, more than any other time of the year, is about the beach, oceans, and self-confidence/independence (which can be empowering, not just to women and girls, but to guys too!). Heathers, because it's a cult classic and it teaches you that popularity isn't everything. It is kind of dark (like very dark), but it's still a great film; plus, it's the basis for Heathers: The Musical!
- Alexa Vuillemot
9. It's Complicated
It's Complicated is such a funny movie, and Meryl Streep does an amazing performance like always!
10. Dirty Dancing
Dirty Dancing--It's a great movie for the summer because it takes place at a summer lodge in upstate New York and is such a great classic love story! Definitely my favorite movie.
11. The Princess Diaries series
Any of the Princess Diaries movies: They are feel good movies that everyone loves!
