Well, if you have not heard, the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Indiana University in Bloomington has been indefinitely suspended and placed under investigation for hazing, and is headed for even more. In short, there is a video of a member of ATO at Indiana performing sexual acts upon a stripper which was brought in by the fraternity.
After watching this, there are many possible reactions someone can have to this. These could be "OH MY GOD" (with different connotations), "Why would you ever do that?", "How could you stoop down to this level?", or even "Hell yeah bro!" All of these reactions are perfectly feasible and someone could see any other person reacting in this way to this video. No matter what, every person who sees this video has to go through some sort of moment of disgust.
When watching this video, there are many things to think about. First of all, why do things like this continue to be caught on video? There has been much controversy over Greek life videos and their content over the past few months, most of them being sorority rush videos, but it still happens. So my question is, why the hell do people continue to let people have phones out and take videos of these things? No, I am not saying just because it's not on video it's OK. What I am saying is, even though what you are doing is absurd, how could you be that stupid?
As a man, I am disgusted by this video. As men, we are supposed to have pride in ourselves, be loyal to our families, and be an example for others. Every single thing about being a man is refuted by this unfortunate young man in this video. Now, is it worth demeaning yourself, is it worth tarnishing your family's name, is it worth it to deny everything you have been taught in your life just to be in a fraternity? Men do not let things like this happen. Boys do. Real men have the utmost respect for themselves and the people surrounding them at all times. Men respect women and do not demean them by paying them off and taking advantage of them.
Personally, this video makes me sick. For someone who participates in this act, there is no way that you can be OK with this. Your reputation is now tarnished forever as a member of the fraternity. Even though you may not have been the focal point of the video, ask yourself, was it worth it?
