As promised, this article is dedicated all of the upstanding men of Great Britain who have decided to wear their hair in buns.
Let me just start by saying I don’t know why this is a thing here and it genuinely confuses me. Allow me to elaborate. Though it took us awhile to pick up on it, one of the first consistent dude-trends my friends and I noticed here in England is what we have proudly titled, “the man bun.” The man bun happens when a guy grows out the hair on the top of his head (think half-pony tail), and then usually buzzes the rest of it or just keeps it short and neat.
From an American girl’s perspective, this is one of the strangest trends I’ve ever seen. If you are a normal guy with a bun in your hair, you can bet you're not giving off that “edgy” or “artsy” vibe I know you’re going for. At best, you’re a little mysterious. But the hard truth is...you really just remind me of a skinny sumo wrestler. It also makes every guy vaguely resemble Russell Brand for reasons unknown.
Also, I take issue with men thinking that it’s OK to throw their hair up in a bun. Come on, thats the one thing that’s ours! Nothing says, “I’ve had a rough morning,” quite like throwing your hair up in a bun. When we girls are rushed for time or have mistakenly overslept, we often resort to the bun (quick shout out to Miley Cyrus and whoever else made the top-knot cool) so that we can carry on with a rushed makeup routine, choosing an outfit, gathering one million things to put in our purse, etc. But what does a guy really have to do in the morning? Is your routine so vigorous and particular that you can’t run a measly drop of gel through your hair before you rush out the door? I’m pretty sure your hair is really one of the only things you have to worry about, so if you have to resort to the top knot, I really do feel sorry for you because your morning must have been downright hectic. Either that, or you wear more makeup than I do, and that’s another article entirely.
Now, reading this, you might be thinking, “I’m sure this trend isn’t that popular.” You may think I’m just being dramatic for the sake of humor, or that my London neighborhood is just a man bun hotbed, so I’d like to make it very clear that I’m not messing around here. The first time I saw a man bun, I thought I had just encountered a very eccentric guy. The second time, I thought I must have just spotted the same man on a different street. The third time I was concerned, so I decided to do some research.
It turns out some bold Hollywood dudes like Jared Leto and Bradley Cooper have sported the man bun, and clearly the international masses have taken notice. Trendy London salon “Fish” has noticed the popular new trend and predicts the man bun (something Londoners are beginning to term “the mun”), will be “the style of 2014.”
I’ve been out of the U.S. for a pretty long time, so I’m not completely up to date with trends at home. I’m just over here hoping that this isn't the new this generation’s “mullet,” and that true man-bun-mania stays on this side of the Atlantic. But I suppose only time will tell.
