October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While cancer affects us all differently and at different times, it is important for us to come together to support the advancements in life-threatening diseases. On Sunday, October 16th people from all over New York came together to show their support in the "Making Strides of Brooklyn" Breast Cancer Walk.
"Making Strides" is an organization that organizes breast cancer events all around the United States. These events are used to fundraise for the American Cancer Society, provide information for reducing risk and treatment, and aim to help affected by breast cancer in any way.
I walked with a team formed by several pre-health clubs from my school. We walked with many other teams; people of all ages and walks of life, through Prospect Park. We started at 10:30am and walked the entirety of the park's main path at least 2 times. We were met with various teams showing their support in various ways. Cheerleaders and dance teams lined the path with routines, schools and hospitals came out for their patients, young children had chants and one team even came in Carnival-styled costumes.
Participating in this event reminded me that while we all may come from different backgrounds and struggles, when we come together we can make a difference. Everyone in that walk had their own reason for showing their support for breast cancer. Whether it was a family member, friend, co-worker, or simply to support this cause we all came together to make a change. I am very thankful to have participated in this event with such amazing people. I hope to do so again in the future and encourage you all to find something you can do to show your support to others.
