I love makeup just as much as the next girl, believe me, I'll admit I own way too much of it. I have an unhealthy obsession with Urban Decay which has resulted the purchase of just about all of the brand's products. When I travel, so do my two makeup cases full of makeup. I can't step foot into a Sephora without blowing $100 or more. (I have a problem, I know).
Makeup allows you to express yourself in away unique to you. Take Grammy-winning recording artist Adele for example. Adele is distinctly known for her winged eyeliner. Makeup gives one the ability to set their self apart from the crowd, to be an unique individual, to create a trademark.
However, I'd realized that I've stopped wearing makeup for myself and started wearing it to fit society's definition of beautiful. Our society puts an astounding amount of pressure on young women to conform to what the media tells them is beautiful. I've experienced this pressure first hand, just as all women have. It's hard and unfair for women to constantly compare them self to the media's depiction of beauty.
Once I reach the realization that it's OK, no,that it's wonderful, to embrace your natural beauty, I decided to share my realization with others. To do so, I consulted my good friend Thomas Fitzsimmons (yes, fellow Odyssey blogger, Thomas Fitzsimmons). For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of meeting this young man, let me just tell you that he is very poetic. After expressing my ideas to Tom, he came to me with the beautiful words spoken in the video that he cleverly titled, "Makeup Your Mind." Thomas also voiced the poem; Morgan Freeman was too busy, (bummer, I know.)
I'm lucky to call the two shinning stars in the video my very best friends. Words cannot describe how inspired I am that both Kaitlyn and Brooke went completely fresh faced - zero makeup, for the turning point of the video. I think we can all agree that their smiles got so much bigger once that makeup came off. Both Kait and Brooke are beautiful with makeup on, however, they are even more gorgeous without it (and so are you).
Well reader, here it is. This video was made to reject society's beauty standards for young women. At this point, I only have one thing to say to you...
Natural beauty is beautiful. You are beautiful.
