Hello, and welcome to 2016! I'm sure you've all made your new year's resolutions and are ready to start the year off right, but people, let's remember to be realistic. Every year we set ourselves up to fail and be disappointed by not achieving the goals we've set for ourselves.
We tell ourselves that this is going to be the year when we finally run a marathon or finish a triathlon, even though we can hardly run a mile without getting winded. We say we're giving up sweets and soda and are primarily going to live off of kale and quinoa for the whole year. HA! Think about how good pizza, ice cream, and cookies are; there is absolutely no way we are keeping that one. Maybe we think we are going to start going to the gym every day, and maybe it really does start out that way. A week later we're down to three times a week, and then two, one, and eventually none.
I'm not saying every single person in the world is a weak-willed as I am, but I'm also pretty sure I'm in the majority. It's important to have goals set up to achieve, but must we lie to ourselves? Maybe this year we should all just resolve to keep on doing the things we've been doing in the past that have worked well for us.
For example, we should keep trying to do our best in school and work. We should keep on calling our parents a couple of times (or once) a week and reminding them how much we love and appreciate them. Maybe we also keep making attempts to go to the gym, and don't get mad at ourselves when we don't actually go. Lastly, we should all keep eating pizza because pizza is good for the soul, and anything in moderation in just fine.
