Insights from Alexa Eldracher:
One sleepy Tuesday morning, while I was sitting at the kitchen counter armed with my giant mug of coffee, I scrolled through my Instagram feed. Through my bleary, haven’t-quite-woken-up-yet eyes, I came across a post from Uberfacts that stated that there is scientific evidence as to why sandwiches taste better when someone else makes them for you. According to them, if we make our own sandwich, we become accustomed to the smell of the ingredients, and then our sense of taste is impacted. However if someone else were to make us the sandwich and then give it to us, we are greeted with a whole slew of new smells and tastes that makes our overall sandwich experience all the more delightful (expect another article sometime in the future entitled: "I Now Refuse to Make My Own Sandwich and I’m Single, so I Haven’t Had a Sandwich in Three Years").
Okay so moving on. By now, if you had made it to this point, you might be thinking, okay that’s interesting, but what’s the point? Well, here it is.
As a rising senior in college, I’m becoming uncomfortably aware of how quickly time is going by. I mean, it seems like the past three years flew at lightning speed, leaving behind nothing but an assortment of memories. I try to cling to them, hoping that if I hold on tight enough, they might once again become reality. But I wouldn’t recommend this approach, as clearly it doesn’t work and here I am trying to figure out what the hell I am going to do with my life after the next two semesters.
Not everybody is in the predicament. Some of my peers are comfortable, knowing that they have jobs lined up, that they know where they are going to live, and that they know who they are going to be with. And I salute them. That is awesome and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
And then there are the rest of us. The ones who don’t know what they are going to do for a living. The ones who don’t know where they are going to live when dorms are no longer an option. The ones who are doing everything they can just to stay afloat, sometimes with a little help, and sometimes feeling completely alone. The more you try to plan the future, the more overwhelming it becomes.
And you know what? Whatever category you fall into, I’m telling you right now that it’s okay. Because you know what we all have in common?
For the most part, everyone loves a good sandwich.
Ladies and gentlemen, the world is your sandwich and all you gotta do is take a nice big bite and enjoy. I’m not saying that you should completely sit back and see what comes your way — if only the world could work that way, right?- but just focus on the process one step at a time. Have the right ingredients to put you where you want to be in the future. If someone offers to make you a sandwich, tell them that you like ham but hate mustard. And then, let yourself be pleasantly surprised in the outcome. You’ll get your sandwich, don’t worry about that. I promise you, it will be delicious.
