Way before college was ever thought about in my mind, I was a kid who loved to read and write. I would stay awake at night trying to finish reading the books I checked out at the public library so that my mother could take me to return them and I could check out more books. As I grew older I continued reading but never once gave thought to the fact that reading and writing took up majority of my time, during school hours and once I was home. Because of this I found it hard to choose a major and a school when it became time for me to start applying to colleges. My major for almost every university I applied to was different, all because I honestly did not know what I wanted to do with my life. I still have no idea how an 18-year-old can possibly know upon graduating high school exactly what they want to do after college.
As students we are forced to have life figured out before the last semester of our high school careers. I suppose a full 10 year life plan is what our parents and teachers want us to have. The issue is majority of students at that point still change their minds about what they want to wear right before it's time to walk out of the house for school in the mornings. Although our parents and teachers believe that life should already be figured out I can tell you now that before embarking in a field you know nothing about, or a major that your parents thought would be great for you.
It is YOUR life not THEIRS. Granted your parents gave birth to you and they love you very much, but they will not be the one's taking the classes nor will they have to work in the field they are telling you to go into. You will be the one in the classes in a major that you may dislike trying to struggle through like I was. The day I applied to North Carolina Central University I believe my declared major was biology; however, that quickly changed once I realized that I would have to take Calculus -- a class that I gladly switched to a science in high school. By the second week of school I was Pharmaceutical Sciences major, needless to say that did not work out like I thought it would have, and I the summer before my Junior year decided that I would just do something I actually loved doing..English!
Do what you LOVE. Many people frown upon certain majors which happen to normally always be in the liberal arts field. The best thing to remember is that doing what you love will make you happy and it will be easier to make money doing what you love than doing something you struggled in all through college. Granted some people may not understand why you chose your major but they are not the one's who will have to sit in the classrooms and learn about something that they never cared about in the first place.
Throughout the transition from high school to college you will encounter a lot of different learning experiences. The best thing about college is that the knowledge you acquire is not just from being in a classroom setting but in a community full of unique individuals who all have the same goal, GRADUATION. The things you are passionate about will bring about like minded friends and will also place you in a major that you will love. However, the greatest thing anyone should remember while in college is that it is okay to make mistakes because mistakes yield growth and your growth will make you a stronger person.
